2 budgies
Hello everyone. My budgie fractured his leg when he was caught in a human door. The vet said that it was the lower femur and that we can try hospitalizing him in a small cage for 2 months because that is all we can really do. He said we can not do a splint because the fracture is to high up. The vet did not really give us much options and said that if it does not heal in 2 months, well... He said that amputation was not an option because budgies do not recover from it. I hope the fracture will heal with the cage rest but I was wondering if amputation is an option? Does anyone here have a budgie who had a leg amputated? Is it possible, because I really do not want to euthanize my little boy. Thank you so much.

Poor thing! There is hope. One of my budgies fractured her femur in a fall and there was nothing the vet could do. I put her in a padded plexiglass cage (old towels on the bottom covered with paper towels) with very low perches and she healed. She lived another year before she died of a stroke.

I would do the same if I were you. No bars for climbing. Use an old aquarium if you need to. Food dishes very low.
