6 mo old Eclectus :)
My baby is just under 4 months old. I got to bring him home today. He had started refusing his formula and definitely preferring the food I bring over formula. So I went home with a sealed small bag of Kaytee formula, I opened it up and there were lots of brown bugs in it!

Its his first night without being offered formula and I am looking for an alternative until I can go tomorrow and pick up some more. I am cooking up some rice, oatmeal and some beans to help him satisfy his warm, mushy needs if he has it.

He has been doing extremely well today. As soon as I brought him home he slept quietly on his perch and is responding well to us and playing with his toys and eating lots of veggies.

I weighed him before I was going to give him his formula and he is up 30 g from his morning weigh-in. As a new mom, I worry! lol Is there anything else I should do?

Thanks!!
Nicki

that sucks there were beetles! We had those once in the pantry. We threw out a bunch of stuff that they got into and we never had a problem again. I'm not sure were they come from, maybe a moth larvae?

I've never weaned a bird before, but to me that sounds like a decent plan. someone with more experience may offer good info :)

I cooked this deliciously mushy warm, tasty food for him and he just wanted his veggies. I guess he will be fine until tomorrow :)

@Copper, I had rice weevils once. That was really hard to move past for me lol all the rice stays in the freezer anymore ;)

Hi nicki. When I brought my two macaws home last year the youngest one was 4 1/2 months old. He was eating all sorts of foods already, but still needed comfort food to feel like Mom was still caring for him. He didn't like the formula anymore & would not take much of it. So I made him plain oatmeal with finely chopped pecans & blended apples mixed in with it. He & his older brother I brought home at the same time & had been weaned for months already, loved it.

Some folks use human baby foods also as a comfort food. For an ekkie the fruit flavors would be my choice if you are still looking for ideas of different things to offer. My ekkie girl, Leyla Belle was almost 6 months old before she was fully weaned. Her breeder said she was not in any hurry to be weaned like her brother who weaned at 4 months. :)

The eclectus breeders I trust use Zupreem Embrace Plus formula. Regular Zupreem Embrace if Plus is not available would be second choice.

this is why I don't care for Kaytee products. I use Zupreem hand feeding formula and have never had any issues with their product.
Switching may cause intestinal upset, so you may have no other choice than go with Kaytee.
I would open the bag prior to buying it in front of a clerk or manager just to make sure it's ok. the batch could be infected....how gross!

i have all my birds weaned by 3 months the odd one that still wants comfort food just gets human baby food, from the meats and veg to the fruits.

So my baby was a little squwaky tonight so I figured he might want some formula. As soon as he smelled it, he got LOUD. So loud, my cat puked which I stepped in and tracked all over the carpet. Gave him some formula, which there was an air bubble in and got all over his face and back. Had his first semi-bath tonight on a full tummy, which I do not think was pleasant for him. Afterwards I had a sleepy ekkie snuggling making happy noises as he was falling asleep on my chest. So, I guess it was a success. I'm sure its something I'll laugh about later :)

Ah, poor baby...and kitty too! My dog Sage threw up more than once the first week Oliver came home. She was beside herself with this green creature now invading her audio space. But, now...they are best of buds. I have to watch Oliver like a hawk because all he wants to do is get close to Sage...who is always close by. It's like she has to be within a few feet of her green feathered sibling...

Ugh! I've had those little bugs before in dog biscuits. Throw out the formula--outside! You don't want them getting into everything in your cupboards. It sound like everything i coming along fine now. ♥
