Hello everyone.. This is the best place i could think of coming as where we live we dont have a bird vet and before i took the 5 hr drive i wanted some advice.. The other day when my 8 month old male eclectus scotty was playing on his swing he lost his grip and fell to the bottom of the cage, he seemed to have clipped his toe on the way down.. His toe was bleeding just below his nail it stopped within an hour. Anyyway it now has a big lump on it. I dont think its broken as it still looks straight. He is constantly sitting with it tucked up and is having difficulty hopping up onto things. He is still eating and talking and is a very happy bird it just seems he constantly has his foot tucked up. Should I be worried and take him to the vet? thanks in advance

Have you got a pic.?

I don't usually take my birds to the Vet unless the toe/nail is hanging & needs removing. Usually an injury to the toe will heal within a week.

Whenever i have an injury like that i clean the area with Betadine Solution. You have to be careful of infection. If he favours his leg for more than a week i would say he hasn't only hurt his toe but maybe there is muscle damage further up the leg. Especially if he limps when he walks.

I am a retired OR nurse and most of the patients were prepped for surgery with a combo of betadine and normal saline solution. It was found that peroxide damages the good skin around a wound so it is not used much any more. Betadine is fine for wounds. To my knowledge betadine is not harmful but I would do what you doc told you to do. When betadine is used on a wound and left to dry it sets up a barrier so to speak so microbes cannot get to the wound. You start painting the solution from the inside of the would in circular motions to the skin, and not back again.
