My GCC was breeding his sleeping hut this past spring. He'll be turning two years old.

I'm wondering if that means he's a male for sure and if anyone else has had this happen?

I have chickens, so I know what bird breeding in general entails. I've tried to get videos of it, but he just stops and comes over. Hut is a small triangle, he clings to the inside sidewall, chatters and does his thing. Couple times a week for a few weeks.

Without a video of it, it's really gonna be hard for any of us to say for sure. Many parrots will mate with inanimate objects which is not really indicative of their gender. My sun conure is a male, DNA tested, yet he tries to mate with any kind of fabric that is soft, including his cuddle hut. He is constantly trying to regurgitate on it. Blankets & pillows as well. I have to snap my fingers to distract him so he'll stop.

Have you considered having him/her DNA tested?

Best way to know for sure is DNA sexing!

I used to have a male budgie that would do the same to his hut.... happy hut was then known as the "humpy hut"!

I only have one bird that uses objects to masturbate with, and it's a female cockatiel!

Monica is right, DNA is really the only way to know for sure, because sometimes female will do the humpy thing, and males will do the butt in the air thing because they don't know any different since they've never been exposed to other birds who are breeding before (like they would in nature). DNA tests are simple these days, you just have to pluck a single feather and send it off. Or the AV can do it for you.

Thankfully, Kiwi never tried to mate with anything in particular, but the first few years we had him he would just walk up and down his perch 15/20 minutes at a time several times a day humping the air and making the most awful noises during the breeding season:52::eek: We got him at the peak of his hormonal years, so THANKFULLY he has calmed down A LOT over the years and just gets a little aggressive/loud (and hasn't done the humpy think the past 2 hormonal seasons). I was *so* embarrassed for him:rolleyes:

I was just curious. I don't care what gender he really is.

Hello, just wondering...do you mean he's actually humping the sleepy hut?

This intrigues me, because Hotrod, my sun conure, (who is around the same age as yours, about 1.5 years old) sometimes will shake on his sleepy hut at night, and even hold on to it flapping his wings... I never thought that what he might be doing is trying to breed his hut! Hmm. I am not quite sure if he is a male or not either, but this makes me curious too!

It would be good to know their sex just in case as male birds can't lay eggs. Sometimes knowing their sex could help you out in a potentially life or death situation. (re: egg-bound hens)

I have heard a few stories of people who rushed their male birds off to the vet because he was acting "off" only for "him" to lay an egg, or for the vet to find the egg! (by feeling or through x-rays)

I still can't get over that name - "Hotrod", it still cracks me up. ;)

Yes, humping the hut, chirping at it, wiggling tail/butt, biting it, the whole 9 yards.

I never saw my female conures masterbate with anything.

My male conures most certainly were not shy about it.

I'm pretty sure it's a boy, and if it releases his sexual frustration, and relaxes him... well... y'know.

I actually recall a video of a female green cheek conure using her owners hand to masturbate on and everyone thought she was a male! She was DNA sexed after the video. ;)
