Illiger's Macaw (Loki)
I haven't fully made my mind up between a Yellow Collared Macaw or a White Bellied Caique, partly because I don't really have a local breeder for a YCM...that I know of.

Can anyone recommend a breeder for Yellow Collared Macaws? I am located just outside Portland, Oregon....

Is having a Macaw shipped a big deal?

Thanks,
Jess

Thanks Wendy.

Seems like a couple of years ago these birds were a bit easier to find...now not so much.

Did you have good experience with Helga's Parrot Patch?

Yes, I had an excellent experience with Helga. I've known her for the past 10+ years. She has, or is still in the process of downsizing considerably. She lost her husband several years ago, and she's getting up there in her years, too.

The only problem we ran into was that her local airport stopped shipping livestock completely, and she took a 4 hour ride (one way) into the city for me to ship my Sam.

Well, still no luck finding a Yellow collared macaw breeder with any chicks available....but I was able to find a 2 year old Illigers macaw at a local rescue.

I have contacted them and am going to try and go see this guy (rescue is very close to me). I am very encouraged by the wording in the description of this guy...

"[FONT=Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif]My favorite word is "what". My vocabulary is growing as I am only 2 years old. I don't like to bite people if anything I may nibble on your finger or ear in a playful way. I am disciplined and will stay on my cage and play for several hours independently"

Suggestions on what to look for when visiting a rescue bird?

I'm sorry you've had no luck finding a YC Mac. I don't know where you are located, but there was one for sale in my neck of the woods only last week. Now I don't remember whether it was Jersey, PA or NY, LOL, but in one of those states, within 100 miles from me.

I'd ask the rescue if they know why the Illiger was surrendered, how many homes he's had, if there is a hatch certificate, if he's been vetted and/or checked for any disease. I'll have my fingers crossed for you that the 2 of you make a connection. Would be ever so sweet! :)

Please forgive my ignorance, you clearly stated in your original post you are outside Portland, OR....a bit far from the East Coast. :32: Sorry about that!

No problem, I've updated my "about me" so that should help in the future.....and as an added bonus I got to post this response...putting me at the 20 post mark so now I can send a PM....lookout!

Weezerj,
At first when I was looking at the mini macaws I was thinking about a yellow collared and a severe. Then I decided on the Hahn's because they are smaller, with me living in an apartment that was the best choice. The breeder I got mine from had some yellow collared earlier in the year. However I was not really impressed in her services, so I would not recommend her. Although I love my little guy. I had him shipped and he servived like a trooper! I like how the severes look, with the black pin feathers around the eyes like some of the full size macaws. This breeder Melzano's Parrot Place doesn't have any yellow collared currently, but they do breed them. They have a pretty good review on birdbreeders.com website. If you contact them they might be able to help. He's based out of San Diego and does ship.

Hi Jess,

I just checked out birdbreeders, and wow, they don't even have the YCM listed under the Macaw subspecies. :11: I don't think these guys are easy to find, are they?
Wendy,
Birdbreeders is weird. That sub menu only shows subspecies that are people have postings for currently. I have seen them on there back in January when I was looking. It seems like they might only breed at specific times of the year.

Weezerj,
If that is the particular breed you really want and you are able to wait, keep looking. I'm sure you'll find one by summer. If I'm not mistaken they were a little more pricey than the other minis. Around $1100 or so.
