we have a new hatchling macaw today and don't know what to do. our birds have been laying unfertilized eggs for some time but one finally took. can they feed them on their own or do we need to intervene?

If you supply the parents with high nutrition diet the parents will feed up to a point. It would be best if you could contact a breeder or hand feeder that could help you. Congrats!!

It would be best if you or an experienced person could take the chick at 3 weeks and start hand feeding.

They can usually take good care of their chicks, but sometimes they don't. You need to be sure the parents are feeding the baby! If not, you really need a brooder since the baby is very young. But if the parents are sitting on him pretty good but not feeding properly, you can feed it every hour around the clock then place him back with the parents for warmth. That rarely happens, but it does happen.... if they are feeding the chick, then I would wait until at least 3 weeks before taking the chick out to handfeed. Its tough at first when they first hatch.
