i am picking up my first conure, 5 months old, tomorrow! any tips or advice on training or anything... I am a rookie on birds! i have never owned one but have alot of experience with other pets!... any helpful advice would be appreciated! thanks everyone!
Congratulations! Do you have a name picked out? What kind of conure is it?
What type of cage did you pick out? And diet were you planning on?
A parrot is definitely going to change your life! Mine took over before I noticed! They are very sneaky about the takeover...one day you will just realize you cater to their every whim...
Welcome to the forum!!! Congrats on getting your first conure. Find out the food he/she is eating and feed the same thing for the time being. Any changes can be made after they settle in. Filtered water is recommended. Just be calm and patient. We can go from there after you pick him/her up tomorrow. Good luck!
I hope you did a lot of research before getting a pet bird because the most important thing about getting a bird, is knowing what you are in for.
First, the bad part of it.
They require a lot of patience... pretty normal, like any other pets.
They want attention, and a lot of it. if they know you can hear them but cannot see you, they will call out to you, and all the time.
They require minimum 2 to 4 hours a day of human interaction, and that is already little. At this point, they need toys and they have to be changed every so often.
Birds are emotional, can get bored and depressed if neglected.
At some point in your ownership, he might want to be the alpha. He might bite you to test your reaction. If you are not careful, if you do something he didn't like, he can hate you. At this point, you have to take it slow, treat him and get him on your good side again. Takes patience... Not saying it happens all the time, but it can happen.
Birds are messy.
About half the food you give them will find itself on his cage floor and about 1.5 meter square around the cage.
They poop every 10-15 minutes. Time it, you might be able to train them to use a spot.
Now for the good part.
They are adorable, astonishingly loving and love to cuddle. They are really playful goofy and simply fun. They can talk a tiny bit, but they don't have clear vocals like the bigger parrots. They are simply an amazing experience, but if you carefully consider the above, they are not for everyone.
I had one, unfortunately I had to let him go with the ex, who I knows loves him dearly and takes great care of him. I should be getting a new one within a couple of days if all goes well.
I am not a pro, in fact I still consider myself a newbie with birds. What I mentioned is out of my own research, my experience and a friends experience with a black headed caique. So all in all, some of my points might not be entirely accurate... just my 2cents.
With all that said, welcome to bird ownership. It's one amazing experience.
