My husband and I adopted a pearled hen a year ago who would have been homeless otherwise; we already had a 7 year old whiteface male, Dickens. Nelly was an active, affectionate, clever tiel with special affection for my husband, and Dickens was always my baby. After Nelly hit puberty, everything changed. Although we had her spayed to prevent yoke stroke, her hormones and his abided, and the two have become a bonded pair. They live in different adjacent cages and are supervised when together, but the affection we used to enjoy is now trumped by species-specific affection. Is there any way we can get our pets back as pets, or should we resign ourselves to years of providing food and care, but being outsiders?
