Bobby, my newly acquired umbrella cockatoo, ate a cheeto and now keeps vomiting. I don't make a habit of feeding my birds junk food, but every now and then will share a tiny morsel. None of my other birds have ever gotten sick like this, and I'm not sure how long I should wait before I take him to the vet. Please help.

Call the vet and ask how long you should wait. It's better than guessing.

I think eating the Cheeto might be coincidental though. It might not be healthy, but I can't think of a reason it would cause vomiting.

Call them ASAP and don't wait. Vomiting is never a good sign, they can get dehydrated fast. Oh and no more cheetos, those aren't even good for us. Rome came to me with liver problems because her last home fed her all kinds of junk food. That stuff builds in their system and over time can kill your bird.

Are you sure he is vomiting and not just regurgitating? Is he doing the "head bob" before it comes up?

Thank you all. I did call the vet and after she chastised me for giving him a cheeto, she told me to take away his food for a couple hours and keep an eye on him. He was actually vomiting from the cheeto and it took nearly an hour to stop. I believe it was the salt that upset his little tummy. I give my M2 a snack like that rarely, but she has never reacted badly. After this, nothing but healthy foods. He is the complete opposite in his food preference to my M2, loves greens and raw carrots, and I think I will leave well enough alone. Not a fun experience.

So glad to hear he is okay!
