Hi I have a 15 week old blue and gold macaw I want to ask for any tips on how to start weaning away the lunch time have feed i have been giving her chop and pellets for the past 4 weeks and only now I can see that she is actually eating a little bit on her own so I think it’s time to start weaning.

Please I’m asking for any tips and suggestions on weaning.

Thanks

Let her wean herself ! At 15 wks she is not ready to be force weaned off formula. She will eventually start refusing formula when she is ready, just let it happen. Make sure formula is at the right temperature - very critical!!! Can really F up her crop if its not. Did you breeder show you how to feed formula?

We usually recommend that new owners do NOT do the weaning, that baby parrots be fully weaned for at least 2 weeks before you accept the parrot, because there are many things that can happen, aside from temperatures, that can hurt or even kill your baby. Absolute cleanliness of the mixing bowl, feeding syringe or spoon, formula consistency. All important. THey can aspirate formula if not done correctly.

Thanks for the advice. Yes the brewer did show us how to feed the formula and the vet even showed us. We have had her for 6 weeks and some days she doesn’t eat very well and others days she eats so well.
