Blanket..

...BB's Uncle DJ is the parront of Pookie,a U2..Pookie loves her "Pookie blanket" climbs under it,does her "Pookie scratching"..looks at DJ with one eye thru the HOLES she has chewed in it. After I told him about a member loosing their 'too from ingesting fibers from chewing on a blanket,he is freaking out.
She loves her blankie! What type/kind of blanket can I tell DJ to replace Pook's old one with?
Anyone know of a website that sells these kind of things?

Jim, I don't have an answer but it is an interesting question. My gut tells me it's something with natural short fibers that can be passed. Obviously you don't want the bird ingesting the fibers but how do you stop that? It may be that there is no good solution and you have to just hope for the best.

Maybe the bird actually likes just being inside the enclosure and if that is the case he could make one out of bird safe materials like white wood. The bird can go inside, scratch, chew holes etc.....just thinking out loud.

Once upon a time, the term blanket meant the same thing short of the type of natural fabric used: Cotton or Wool. Today, the fabrics are near endless.

Without causing a total freak-out. Consider first keeping the threads cut very short! This will stave-off the threads being ingested.

The offending fabric is everyone of them that develops threading when they are worked by the Beck.

Bill...Pookie is an odd duck for sure. DJ sleeps on his couch a lot ( works 3:30pm to midnight gets home around 1 am) and lets Pookie out for an hour or so..then puts her to bed in her house in a separate bedroom. Pook wakes at times at sunrise and SCREAMS for Daddy,and DJ puts her in one of those large pet carriers and sets it beside him in the living room. Pookie will play in that carrier for hours ( does her "pookie scratching" as DJ puts it) and he can get a couple more hours sleep,just because she can see him.

Steven..I've seen the blanket and it has HOLES lol..Pookie gets under it then positions her head so she can look out with her one eye ( Scooter, Pookie's "mate" took one of her eyes out many years ago coz Pookie didn't wanna fool around )
Scooter has since been rehomed

Maybe DJ should just replace the blankie with something similar,just with no holes!

Not sure whether a new blanket would be the answer as Pookie is likely to just cut new holes.

Better to keep after DJ to keep the fibers cut short!

Isn't the issue with ingested fibres more about the length of fibre twisting around a gut? Would fleece be safer?

Would pooky even accept a new blanket?

ichyfeet, yes, my thought...we once lost a cat because of that. But now with all the synthetic fibers, who know's what other damage they can do even if short. The synthetic fibers aren't going to get soft from the digestive acids like a natural fiber might and therefore could cause irritation or even get lodged somewhere because of their synthetic properties.....again, no experience just thinking out loud.

I guess that's true. A lot more manufacturing would go into a synthetic fibre...

Last time I did that, I was give a choice;
I could walk myself out the front door, or

I prefer fleece for my birds but...

Why not PRE cut the holes in the blanket so she can look out? Easy enough xP
