Biting then Scratching

Hey!

Well so not long time ago I realised that a lot of times, when Mambo bites me a finger and I tell him NO and want to put him somewhere else, he just puts the head down, get all fluffed and want me to scratch his head.

Does any of your birds do this?

I have the feeling that he know that he did something bad and he does that for me to forgive him. Or that he is manipulating me in order to stay where he is. I'm curious to know if your birds do the same or not.

Also, I always put him away even if I scratch his head cause he has to learn that biting is not good.
Am I doing this okay?

No, never.
Been bitten many times and Bingo and Pacho never showed the slightest remorse.
Bingo wanted a chance for a better grip.
Haven’t had any bites from Luna that were not due to improper handling.

Trying completely ignoring the behavior the next time it happens. It may be that your response is reinforcing the behavior-- he may be doing it to get your attention (and if you look at him, say no etc, then he is getting that from you).
When do you do immediately after he bites? Do you relocate him or anything? What are you doing when you get bitten?

You are being played like a fine violin. Next bite and forever after, no scratches immediately after a bite just relocate him to a time out spot ( and not to his cage ). Totally ignore him, no eye contact, for a few minutes.

Try to understand why he bit you in the first place.

LOL...Yeah, he's playing you pretty well...He bites you, then he puts his head down like he feels sorry, so you just start scratching him...So basically he bites you and then he gets scritches...That's a pretty sweet deal he's got!!

You need to stop saying anything or doing anything when he bites you except simply putting him down and ignoring him by just walking away. Don't tell him "No" when he bites you, that means nothing to him except that he's getting your attention..Just silently put him down, walk away, and ignore him for at least 5 minutes...Do that a few times and I bet the biting will stop..

He doesn’t really bite super strong but when he does I put him on his playstand and walk away, but since 2 weeks or something like that he doesn’t step up he just shows me his head to scratch him

Thanks for confirming me about it! No more scratches, and if he doesn’t want to step up I’ll just leave him there and leave the room!

Oh, he is a smart one! Has you wrapped around his little toe already. It really makes me smile when I realize just how conniving they are. My BFA will do the same kind of things. Peck at my fingers, making believe he is going to bite me, then look for a petting. Sometimes, he will press a little too hard, and I will say " OW Sam, that hurt " and he will look surprised as if to say," well, I wasn't really biting you ".

I think ignoring the behavior will help him to stop. And, only time will help develop a relationship between you and him. Keep moving forward, and you will one day be rewarded with a sweet loving Mealy!
