5 parakeets and Two 7yr old severe macaws Dexter(m) and Peek-a-Boo(f) two Blue and Golds Oscar(m) and Lilly(f) both mid teens
I just got 2 severe macaws today the previous owner was breeding them . Everytime you get nearr them they want to bite (not nibble) you. Dexter the male spreads his wings out and bobs around before lunging. How do I keep them from biting?????

I may be mistaken but breeding pairs are extremely difficult to handle and interact with. I would look for videos on stick/touch training and start there.

Severe Macaws have a "strong" personality in the first place, and on top of that, it doesn't sound like they were being kept as handleable pets before. If that's the case... I'd say they just aren't "pet quality" birds. Very difficult to tame wild adults even for an expert would take a long time (if ever) they'd become what you'd like. Especially if they're bonded and together.

What is the story on how you got them? We're you looking for this species? Did you expect tame ones - did they tell you they were handleable? So many questions :)

Breeders tend to revert back to wild behaviors. There's a chance they will never be user friendly.

I SECOND EVERY WORD OF THIS!! THESE BIRDS ARE NOT TAME, THEY ARE PAIR BOND BIRDS, AND THEY ARE BONDED TO EACH OTHER. I don't know that they will be interested in interacting with people. Especially if they were kept in substandard conditions. PISSED OFF BIRDS is probably closer to the truth.

MY LEAST FAVORITE MACAW TO WORK WITH... And I'll give you my standard joke:

How did the severe macaw get it's name?

Answer:

Nurse: How bad was the wound from that bird bite?
Doctor: It was SEVERE!

I had one slice my thumb open down to the bone...

thanks for all the responses. The ad said they were a 7yr old breeder pair, they are very bonded and he said they had babies last spring. the person I got them from teased them alot so I was thinking that might have a lot to do with their attitude. I've gotten attached to them already (didn't take long )

That will not help their disposition at all...

THERE IS NOTHING FIERCER THAN A MALE MACAW WHEN A FEMALE IS ON EGGS. YOU DO NOT WANT TO EVEN TRY TO HANDLE THEM WHEN THAT IS GOING ON.
