Hey everyone :)

I've had Chewie for a few months, and she's doing so well - shes learnt to mimic my 'kissy noise' so we have endless conversations of it now!

My latest worry as a new bird mum is how long her little claws should be and how often I should get them trimmed... she's 5 months old now and hasn't had any manicuring done so far!

Thanks for any advice anyone can give!

I know when my guy is ready for a trim when they feel like little needles poking into my skin. You'll know! :D

I use a pumice safe perch and never have to clip my galahs nails, they stay the perfect length and are never painfully sharp. I used to always have scratched up arms from her lol Also no stress for her :)
Just make sure to only use one, to many rough perches are bad for feet and can give them sores.

Oh brilliant :-D i'll get her a little pumice perch then. I'm starting to get all these little red scratch marks on the backs of my hands from all her clambering about!

I saw two brands of that at Petco. One had excess glue slopped around the pumice (isn't quality a thing of the past?) but the other had perfect application, with nothing shiny that would concern me... both almost looked the same, otherwise - thick plastic perch with the pumice glued on... I picked up the ones that looked like some effort went into making them, and will put them in my fids' cages tomorrow.

I almost picked up a 24" rope/wood ladder, until I saw the amount of dried glue that a bird WOULD pick off with its beak and possibly ingest... for 15 dollars, I'd expect a flawless ladder, carefully constructed. Not gobs of glue dried everywhere that reflect light to make it look shiny, appealing to birds to poke at and possibly swallow after pecking at, since birds dig shiny things... and as nothing was stated about the type of glue being "non-toxic", I wouldn't pay 15 CENTS for such cheap slopartist crap...

Pardon my use of slang...

The good brand is "Sweet Feet & Beak" and the perch is called "Safety Pumice Perch". Size and species-compatible information is clearly stated... the other brand I don't recall, but I'd swear the packaging was more spartan and generic..

Wow thank you for all the info! :-D i'm not sure if we have Petco over here in the UK though. I did manage to find a nice little perch on a great website called Northern Parrots though so I might give that a try. I'm also hoping Chewie might file the point off her little beak with it too! I have even more little red cuts and marks on my hands today lol :) silly bird.
