Birds are Amazing

hi everyone i went to a bird sanctuary a while a go and got to hold a bhc!i went there again but couldn't hold the bhc so i was bummed. but the first time i was such a treat to be able to hold the him and see all the birds. i was just wondering is a treat every time you hold your own birds or do you get used to it. Just curious!

I hate to say it but yes, we get used to it. There's still nothing more heartwarming than snuggle time though!

*for me however, when he go through a biting phase where stepup is a problem, there is a sense of relief and return to that sort of elation for a short time every time they step up.

My birds still continue to amaze me and every time we make progress it's a great sense of accomplishment. There are always things to work on with your birds (training, talking if you have an appropriate species, trust, diet, harness training, socialization, flight, recalls, etc. etc.) so even though your original progress will become ordinary you can always seek to improve in other ways. Even if we are not specifically working on something my birds continually surprise me. For instance...Greenleaf who is very temperamental and currently in molt let me put her on her back and played with me. That's never happened before. Eva now lets us hold her upside down on our finger like a little bat - also a decision she made herself. As long as you put in the time every day there will always be new surprises with your future caique

I hate to say it but yes, we get used to it. There's still nothing more heartwarming than snuggle time though!

The interactions factor with parrots is just off the hook... and the term "bonded" works both ways.

I got use to it but occasionally Venus will do something that brings back that elated feeling. For example, once I was passing her cage, she stretches herself and grabs my shirt with her beak. I had to back up, lol and she jumped on my shoulder. Sunday I was vacuuming and had my back to her cage. I bent over to pick something off the floor and got startled at the sudden feeling of little bird feet on my lower back. Venus agin, she jumped and landed on my lower back. I slowly stood up and she climbed up to my shoulder. I love that my fids want to be with me.

Well, I'll explain it this way. When a bird this big and powerful actively seeks you out, climbs on your arm, and then lays down with her head sideways on your shoulder for an extended all over head scratch...

I don't care who you are, you just melt!

She'll step up for anybody. Anyone who's nice to her gets that...

My daughter and I get THIS, and more. They open up to you in ways you just never realized was possible until you experience it.

And that's what "bonded" parrot ownership is all about. And it's a two way street. Bonded works both ways. Losing this bird would kill me... it would be almost like a parent losing a young child. It's honestly more like a parent child relationship than it is a "pet" relationship. They are that interactive, and that loving.

And the bird with her head lying on my shoulder, is the same bird that someone else couldn't wait to be rid of... and that is the exact opposite of bonded. They are a lot of work, and if you don't do the work, you don't get the reward.

But It's a lot of work.

You try everything from Pluck no more to trying to put a collar on her, which flips her out big time to vet trips and mite checks only to come to the realization that it's not something physical. A year and a half later and she is still half naked from the neck to the chest.

My point is, owning a bird is not all fun and roses. You have to love them for what they are, just like my bird loves me even though I'm short, fat and ugly, so why would I feel any different towards her no matter her faults. She forgives me of mine:31:.
