Birds and Other Pets

Alright, so I currently own a cat and I'm looking to get a cockateil this summer. I'm prepared to take the time to let them get used to each other but I don't know exactly how. I've been searching up information about how to introduce pets and birds but I feel like it would be better to learn here where people have personal experience with these things. I doubt I will ever let my cat and bird out in the same room due to all of the possibilities of injury or disease, even when closely supervised.

So I'm wondering if any of you all have any experience or tips with introducing other pets with your birds. Thanks!

Never get them used to each other, never trust the cat!

I have a cat and 2 conures - I second the statement of never trust your cat (it's an instinct and you can never be 100% sure).

I wanted mine to be acclimated, in that I don't want the birds to freak out when the cat walks past their cage and they are inside it. I also wanted to be sure that the cat knows that it is not okay sit by the cage and bother the birds. My cat is very good around the birds and doesn't stress them - but I never, ever leave them out unsupervised (even just leaving the room while they are out flying). I have not ever seen my cat display any inclination to go after the birds, but I would be heartbroken if anything ever happened so I just never provide the opportunity.

I really don't mean any of that to sound negative Everyone gets along quite well in my house and I feel that they coexist quite peacefully as long as I don't ever take chances with their wellbeing.

I have to agree with the above comments, you can't trust another animal around your bird even if it is another parrot. You never know what could happen, unless they have their own protective environment they feel safe in without any other animals I would remain with your bird at all times while you get it adjusted to life with a cat.

Agree with others. My bulldog lost his trust after I came home to find this.
