I have an issue with my 18 mo old male B&G. He has developed a habit of shrieking every time I walk by his cage and sometimes when he's on my shoulder. It's definitely intentional, rather than just random macaw noise. It is so shriek that my ears ring after, especially when he's on my shoulder.

I don't react to it and I've also tried making sure I chat with him as I walk by his cage but he still does it.

Is there any other way to try and stop this. Its really quite painful.

He gets out a ton so he's definitely not being ignored. I think he just has a little game but soon I'll need a hearing aid if he keeps it up.

Have you looked under the behavioral heading? Does your b&g do it when someone gets near you? How often does he do this? My severe macaw is over bonded with me, she's a lot better these days but from time to time, she will scream for me if I'm gone from the room to long or if the cat lays on my lap..lol

It sounds like some sort of greeting to me... and some sort of macaw game.

Could be "macaw exuberance" happy to see you kind of thing.

I haven't run into this particular problem before, other than just when they generally get loud, you whisper, and they have to quiet down to hear what you say...

It's not like it's a screaming disorder, or an attention thing.

Thanks! I agree, this is not a screaming disorder at all. I think it's a game for sure. He's taught my CAG to do it too though she can't blow out my eardrum like he can lol. They teach each other words all the time.

I think I'll just have to keep trying to ignore it and hope the game stops or price out hearing aids.

Love the Whisper game when he gets loud.
In fact BF was in the other room and i yelled something to him and BB started whispering to me. LOL They are so smart it still amazes me.
