Birdie Experience

Hi everybody! I posted an introduction, so I won't repeat everything that I said there. The gist of it is that I do not currently own a bird but I want to own a bird. I'm very drawn to the CAGs, but I'm also potentially interested in a Sun Conure. I'll leave details of situation and decision making to a future post, since that's not the purpose of this.

I'd like to have an opportunity to get around birds more before I make a decision regarding whether or not a bird is the right pet for me (I've kept everything from dogs and cats [currently have a dog and cat] to reptiles [snakes, lizards, and turtles] to small exotic animals [sugar gliders -- which I don't think I'd do again].

I don't feel like I can make a truly educated decision about whether or not to get a bird unless I've had the opportunity to spend time with them getting to know more about them first hand (such as training and cleaning and so on).

What is the best opportunity to get around parrots in a personal capacity? I'm not looking for employment, more like a mentor. I live in NE Ohio.

Can you volunteer or visit a local rescue? I'm on the other side of the world so not much help as to which ones, but from what I hear that would be an excellent way of seeing and handling different species, and different 'personalities' within species.

Choosing between a Sun and AG will be an interesting challenge! You're totally going the right way about it!

Also from a island across a pond from you. Rescues are a good option and seeing if your area has any bird or parrot clubs.

I'm sure if someone on here can't direct you, a bit of google searching or looking into your local community might help?

I'm bias and say conures are awesome, but potentially very loud especially in the sun conure side of the family (argentina?). But CAG's owners always talk fondly of their birds too. MAybe you can catch someone who's had both that can advise you if you decide to get a bird.
