I just bought this heater (De'Longhi Oil Filled Radiator https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000TGDGLU?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title) after seeing some old parrot forum posts where people said they use it around their birds. However, I've had it off-gassing on my porch for a day and it still smells. It's like a chemically smell. Not as strong as when I first turned it on but it's still there. Has anyone bought one of these heaters off Amazon recently and can you confirm it's safe or not? Or is there another brand that's definitely bird safe?

I have one of these. They are about as safe as possible. Just let it cook outside until any manufacturing fluids burn off. Shouldn't be much. If it persists you may have a defective unit. Rare but hey anything made in China is aways a crap shoot.

This design of areav/room heater has been around for 20+ years and uses a heat source that is incased and screwed into the oil well of the unit. The heat causes the oil to warm and rise within the unit and as it does the oil colds and returns to the bottom to be heated again. The failure mode its to overheat, but the unit has a built in high-temperature devise that cuts the power if that happens. Clearly, if the unit is fully fails, turn it off or unplug it!

For rooms within it maximum heating rate (Commonly listed in Square Feet or Square Meters) they work well. Best results is in a room that is a bit smaller.

My good friend wrench13 recommendation is great as a manufacturing coating is commonly used on metal products to assure easy of assembly and protection during shipping. As stated, setting the unit outside for a few hours will eliminate the coating.

We have built a new home, now 10 years ago and it includes all the modern devices and building methods to reduce energy and maintain a stable temperature. As a result, we are no longer using supplemental heating in our home. But have used that type of product in the past without issue.
