Hi,
We live in Saudi and the only parrot food available here in the pet shops is parrot mix of grain, sunflower seeds, corn, and peanuts as I'm learning more I'm finding out that this isn't the healthiest food for my young African grey since he leaves out the grains.
We give him this mix for breakfast. Then fruits and vegetables through the day. Any better suggestions for healthier breakfast? If we try to look for pellets any particular brand to avoid or look for? I've started sprouts today. Chickpeas and mong. Could these be given for breakfast daily once they start sprouting?
TIA

Sheeji, I have been to SA and several other countries in the middle east and would be
careful of feeds sold in some pet shops as many shop keepers do not hold companion birds in the same importance as you and I do.....often they are just merchandise that can be replaced.

I have seen bird food bags/containers with small holes in them and with webs in them, indicating that the bags/containers have been compromised by insects..... Although the insects are probably fine for a companion bird to eat, mine usually eat them if I ever miss them in a new bag/container...lots of protein, but the point is that if the package has been compromised, there is the possibility that the corn, peanuts & other grains might have mold spores on them, allowing for possible aflatoxins that can lead to aspergillus infection.....

You might want to look through the forum's archives for recent chop mixes (recipes for fresh food mixes).....Sometimes I thought the fresh foods in SA looked better than what is offered in some of the super markets here in the states.....

Good luck.....

So far food in the boxes I have opened seems fine. But I really don't want to continue. As I said he only ever has it for breakfast.. I will look at chop recipes what about the sprouts that I mentioned for breakfast everyday? Good idea?
Thanks

Sprouting is fine, you just have to be careful of your sprouts going sour on you.....

Good luck.....
