Last night, my baby Blue Crowned conure, Roscoe, fell down the stairs in our home. He was sitting on my finger while I carried him down the stairs and my slipper got caught and I tripped a bit. He immediately fell off, hit the floor with a thud and proceeded to roll down 17 stairs; he landed with a thud on the hardwood landing and hit the wall!!!! I thought that I had killed him! I am happy to report that today he is doing fine and other than being a bit cranky with me for flinging him down the stairs, he seems to have suffered no ill effects. I couldn't sleep at all last night and kept checking on him. I did call the vet last night and he said to just keep him warm (I did put a water bottle in his cage) and let him rest since he didn't seem to be suffering from any injury.

His wings were clipped quite short when I got him so he cannot fly at all and hits the floor whenever he tries--he doesn't even gain any lift whatsoever. This was the first time I let him just perch on my finger while carrying him down. Lesson learned--keep birdie close in areas where they can fall!!!!!

I am so thankful that he is ok. We have really steep stairs and I consider it a Christmas Miracle that he is with us today :)

I don't know what to say, other than I'm glad your blue crown is OK... and that you should try to take precautions against the poor bird bouncing down stairs.. its a concussion waiting to happen.. or a broken bone... worst case scenario is death. :(

Thanx for joining and once again, glad your bird is OK..

OMG glad he seems alright and glad you did not fall down the stairs as well. Accidents happen which is why they are called accidents and that is how we learn. Very glad at my age we live in a one story house with no stairs.:)

Eina poor Roscoe, glad he was not injured, the same goes for you. Imagine what went through his little mind, oh shame.
No more slippers on the stairway okay

You know, I have lived in this house for 18 years and I have three young children; I have probably carried them up and down the stairs a million times and have never tripped or fallen!

Definitely won't be wearing anymore slippers to come down the stairs and I will be holding him close from now on.

He is either holding a grudge today or is still sore (I wrenched my back too so I can identify). Seems to be ornery with me and no one else and he used to trust me above all others. This really upsets me because he gave me my first kiss yesterday---mere moments before he fell down the stairs :( I think it will take a while to gain back his trust....but I am thankful that he is ok. I have to say that if it wasn't so horrifying and awful, it would have been funny because my kids thought I threw a green ball down the stairs at first....

Poor baby. I'm glad he's ok though. Things could have ended much worse. He was probably so scared after that.

I was walking down my basement steps and my little black cat got under my feet and tripped me. I broke my fall on my tailbone and slid down a bunch of steps hitting my lower back on each step. I didn't break my coccyx bone thankfully, but I did end up herniating 2 discs in my lumbar region and I've got a couple now that are bulging. :( It was instinct to keep my head up when I fell so I didn't crack my head back on the steps. I ended up very lucky. Things could've ended up so much worse than just a few herniated discs. My father doesn't seem to think so, I keep telling him I could've broken my neck. I had to sit on one of those inflatable round donut things to help with my bruised coccyx bone. Steps are scary things :p

:11: YOWSER!!!

SO glad that neither Roscoe OR you were injured. Try not to think of what "could have happened." You surely had a guardian angel, or like you said, you had your Christmas miracle. :)

Man, CustomCasket, you really took a bad tumble. You are lucky you didn't break your neck!! YIKES. Our cat likes to run up the stairs at night when the kids go to bed and we are all super careful and hold on to the railings when she does this--but I am always worried that one of the kids will trip and fall down the stairs. I am paranoid about the stairs--they are very steep since we live in a 200-year-old home--and I close a baby gate every night just in case the kids might wake up in the middle of the night and try to go down the stairs. My husband thinks I am crazy...but accidents happen and they can be terrible. So sorry that happened to you--I have back pain and it is the worst!

I never carry Erin up or down stairs, except if it's outside at a public place. I always let her fly up or down, or let her walk. She has feet and wings for a reason and both work. It's a lot safer and gives her exercise.

Thankful that you are all ok. Those things are VERY scary. My chihuahua fell down a large flight of stairs once. I felt SO guilty but he did end up fine. On that emergency vet visit, they actually found the early signs of his heart disease. So it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. He wasn't due for an exam for another 6 months or more, but we caught the disease early and began treatment early. So maybe there is a bright side to your fall too? No one was terribly injured but maybe that accident will warn you how easily he can fall until the feathers grown in more.
Hope your back feels better.

I was holding onto the railing. That's the scary thing!! Every time somebody says they fell down the stairs (like this post) it makes my heart drop. I worry so much about steps. That was the worst fall I've taken. I've had a few tumbles down those basement steps and each time I've been lucky. I've never taken the birds down in the basement. If I did I have a feeling Kayak would be on my shoulder or Carlisle would be down my shirt. I also have a feeling I'd be prying a bird from the rafters and they'd be laughing the entire time I was trying to catch them. :p
It was a lesson learned for all on this forum. You can never be too careful.

"I fall, I rise, I make mistakes, I live, I learn, I've been hurt but I'm alive. I'm human, I'm not perfect but I'm thankful."

Glad you and baby are okay. Keep a real close eye on him in case he's injured but hiding. it. Sounds like he's fine ... just pissed. He'll get over it.

I think that Roscoe has finally forgiven me for the fall down the stairs! I received a kiss last night and he was purring while preening my hair. He still is nervous walking on my finger throughout the house, but we are working on that.

I ran into my vet at a Cub Scout function and he told me that if Roscoe had sustained internal bleeding from the fall, he would have been dead within a 1/2 hour. According to him, you pretty much know right away if they are going to be ok or not. I wish I had known this then, because I was worried about him all night long!!

Every day is a learning experience....
