I don't know if anyone else's Macaw tries to be big, and scary as a joke, but Lucy seems to. One night I was walking past her cage to turn on the Christmas lights we use for night lights, and turn the big overhead light off for bedtime. She was standing on her perch looking the other way. As soon as I got close to the side of the cage in one movement she turned, jumped, hissed, and grabbed on to the side of the cage. Which scared the crap out of me cause she never done it. She did it to me a couple other times, and then as she was hanging on the side of the cage would want me to rub her belly, and neck. Well she did it to my wife also, and now when she is in your cage whenever you walk past she does it. Then she hangs there waiting for you to rub her belly. She seems to get more excited if she makes you jump or gets a reaction from you. Anyone else have a kiddo do that or something similiar?

Yes. I work with a LOT of macaws and many of them, friendly and agressive alike like to make a big display of nothing, and pretend they are a big scary monster.

My Ripley does it. But I don't think he's playing when he does it. ;) When my husband comes home from work and greets me, and then walks past Ripley's cage without acknowledging him, he'll get quite mad.

All feathers will stand up, wings out, and he bangs his beak again the cage bars while making growling sounds. My husband though he was only showing off, and bravely proceeded to rub his belly, only to realize Ripley meant business. :54:

Now he'll fluff up with me, too, but the entire body posture is different. He makes the cutest sounds when I approach him in the cage - makes my heart melt each and every time. :D

She makes it a point to after she hangs press her belly up against the bars as best she can, and if you stick your other hand up there she will hang from your fingers, and press her belly up against the bars for you to rub it. She is a goofball. None of her feathers are raised or anything. She just jumps, and hisses then hangs there. What makes it even better is if you don't pet her belly or pay attention to her she will continue to hang there, and then pretend she is stuck or falling off until you do come to pet her or talk to her lol.

Midnight does this all the time, inside her cage or outside, if you dont pull away she just grabs you and kisses you, then goes back to normal, pull away and she will draw blood.
