Auggie: Dusky Conure
I stop by PetCo today and had to visit their birds and I was astounded at what I saw. Are there artificial growth hormones for birds? Have some breeders started using some? Almost every bird there was drastically larger than they should be.

There was an alexandrine which was at least a foot tall from head to toe NOT to the end of the tail! It was the size of moderately sized macaw.

Next to it was a caique which was larger than any quakers I've ever seen. I thought caiques were relatively small parrots.

Also the Dusky Conure was larger than average, but not as extreme - but it's eye color caught my eye. As far as I know dusky's eyes are light brown to hazel, this one's eyes were DARK brown to almost black.

I may be paranoid, but all together it was an eerie experience - I felt like I was in the twilight zone of monster birds.

Oh yes, and the ages they were labeled with: the Alexandrine was said to be 3 months old; the Caique was 5 months old.

Then there was the unlabeled bird - if I had seen a photo of it I'd say it was obvious that it was a green cheek ... but seeing it in person it was larger than the largest sun conures I've seen.

Holy crap! I wouldn't doubt that people now days would go above and beyond to sell their birds. I'm not sure why people are so heartless. That can't be good for the birds, if infact they are using harmones.

wow...
People do anything for money. no ,matter how harmful.
Is this even legal?
Is there anyone to contact (maybe the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Services?) about it?
Hopefully this tactic for selling a bird won't spread among breeders...

I think the hormones was a joke, as I can't see anyone seriously doing that...and there isn't enough proof.

Half joke yes. I don't really suspect they are using any... not really...

But something was disturbingly unnatural about all those birds. SOMETHING is fishy there - but I couldn't guess what it is.

Ya know, I was in a pet shop back in Decemeber and they had some 'tiels that were as big, if not bigger than, my Sun Conure ... I actually was thinking the same thing ... maybe it's just something in the food up here in New England ...

actually cockatiels are about that size. My cockatiels are about the same size as my senegal(minues the crest and long tail but like the torso i geuss you could call it is the same size). :)
