Best travel carrier?

Hi. I posted in another thread about how I am in the process of getting my dad's (he passed away last year) bird from the states to Canada. It is quite the process. I am wondering what pet carriers work best for traveling on planes. I am flying to Florida to pick him up then will be flying back to Canada. He will be on the plane with me. The export papers I need to fill out asked about crates amd carriers. Suggestions?

This lady is right across fr me (yes I'm somewhat giving away where I work). I see her everyday. My fids use her carrier. She is a great person, very kind, very hard-working. Contact her (Angie) at the e-mail at the bottom of the website.

Don't get knock-offs or substitutes. Her carriers are sturdy, fairly-priced, and well-made. She will make custom-orders, colors, and can design something to effectively suit the situation.

PS: (Remember to check with the airline to clear that you can bring your buddy onboard and make sure there are no miscommunications, surprises, or whatnot)

I have their Pak-O-Bird, medium olive for Levi and I love it. It is made of high quality all around and I also use it when we travel. (Not on a plane) He use to do laps around his travel cage. Whereas in this backpack he can’t. I love the hooks to hang toys and the food bowl.

However, if you don’t have him in the cabin with you, I would go with Sailboat’s recommendation, b/c of the hard plastic sides. I’ve had a kitten and a puppy flown to me back in the day. They came in the exact crate Sailboat suggested. :smile049:

You need a hard sided carrier that fits under the seat in front of you, and each airline has their own requirements. Check the website for the airline you will use to see what the dimensions can be and what other documentation must be filed. Some flights don’t allow any animals in the cabin and some might have a limit of one animal in the whole plane, so you need to get your reservation made as soon as you can. You will need the documentation requested by the airline in order to board with the bird. Then you might need additional doc to get through customs esp. to avoid quarantine. Be sure to get “Live Animsl” stickers for the carrier and have your name and info as well as emergency care instructions posted on the container itself.

For car travel, the plastic dog crate boxes are better than the folding wire crates. The wire crates can collapse in an accident, killing the bird or allowing it to escape. The travel carrier from the plane should be good to get you home from the airport. Good luck!

Another vote for the Pak-O-Bird. They make them in Brooklyn, NY, I watched them make the one for Salty. Their designs keep changing as the figure out wht works an what does not. They are not cheap, but they are top of the heap good. Not only for the owner but for the birds too. Food and water cups, solid wood perch (not a dowel), roll down shade panels, so it can double as a sleeping cage. More types of straps and hook on points than you can shake a stick at. And you can pick the color.

I use this one for mine, but I don't think it would fit under a plane seat. But it's a good travel cage!

Thank you all so much! I am going to speak to a travel agent and see what the best way to go is. I know he will be with me in the cabin and I heard that I need a CITES export. Just not sure if the airline asks me for this? I need a Canadian import as well in order to get into Canada. But, it sounds like I need to contact the airline to see what they require.

What Kentuckienne said!! Check with the airline for maximum carrier dimensions. They vary a bit depending on the aircraft, and you'll want to avoid the smaller of the "regional jets" with cramped cabins. They have far less volume under the seats. (less likely but not outside the possibility for a flight from Florida to Canada) You'll also want a pre-assigned seat that is *not* a bulkhead row (cabin divider wall in front of seat) or in some cases an exit row. (some airlines do not allow animal carriers in an emergency exit row)
