I just got into keeping birds, and I have had 2 parakeets and I now am wanting a new bird, and I narrowed it down to either a cockatiel or a conure. I think I want a conure, I know how demanding they're and all, but what's the best type to get fr a first time conure owner? I was thinking green cheek...what's the most cuddly and affectionate to anyone? Also, if you could briefly explain the care for it? Thanks soooo much :)

I would say go with the maroon bellied conure, Ive heard they are just like green checks but less nippy and quieter :p
Though I have two maroon bellied conures and they are the most cuddly creatures in the world. They love attention and are the biggest clowns. My two aren't loud at all and they don't bite/nip :D

Green cheeks will give you the conure attitude, their funny habits, but none of the ear-splitting screams of the suns or nandays.....

Ash is right about MBCs, they are a bit quieter.....

Good luck

I have a CinnamonGC and I love her. I can only speak for my bird cause I have never had any other. I have been around some Suns and they are bigger then the GC. My bird picked me so I didnt have any trouble picking love at first site. All the conures are cuddly and they do the funniest things, just some are louder then other. Good luck

My favorite is the yellow sided green cheek conure. I love all the colors. Like having all the colors of the big parrots in one tiny little body. as for care get the biggest cage you can afford. All three of my parrots have their own flight cage. with lots of toys to keep them busy and some different size and kind of perches. I feed my gcc a base diet of Higgens gourmet sun conure mix which has veg fruit nuts seed and some pellets in it The bag has a pic of a sun . conure on the bag. and also daily a dish of veggies. a whole grain, a protein source. fruit. also a piece of millet spray a couple of times a week. The veg dish varies and if you look at the conure forum and the recipie sections have lots of ideas.:)

I have a turq. GCC, and he is a DOLL! Super cuddly, playful and friendly. He is my first bird, and I couldnt have picked a sweeter bird than him! My husband and I are VERY happy with him, he was worth every penny. He is a little nippy, but it's not a problem, very easy to control. My little guy is pretty quiet, even his loudest sound is not that bad. We got ours as a 3 month old baby, and he was hand raised and fed, so thats probably why he is so good.

Interesting to know that the Maroon Bellies are quieter and less nippy! Some day if I ever get another one, I will check them out.

Good luck with your choice!

Wow thanks! I really like the maroon-bellieds, but I am not sure where to get one...I know that there is a very reputable breeder not far from me and I have been to his place before, and right when I walked in a gcc flew and landed on my shoulder (he raises them and tames them so that's a plus) and it was adorable (hence why I now want a conure lol). So what's the care for these little guys? I am not sure what cage to get so if you could, links would be greatly appreciated :)

I'd definitely go for a GCC or maroon bellied. I have a Dusky and a Sun and holy crap are they loud. My ex has a GCC and he's loud in his own way, but not ear piercing.

GCC is good. I. Have 2 parakeets like you and plan to get a sun conure in the future. Theres a breeder in my town. Visited her and heck are her baby suns loud. I would think you would fit the gcc catagory

Why don't you visit a room full of conures then decide from there? I personally would choose a Cockatiel over a conure any day. I absolutely can not stand conure screams...And I have big birds here, that should tell you something...visit first before narrowing it down!

Hmm...so now I want either a gcc or marion bellied. I think I am leaning toward maroon bellies since, from what I have researched, are a but nicer and quieter of any of the conures...and also because the breeder across town has some I think :) My concern is, what would I do if I go on vacation or something? I read that mb's bond with many people, not just one like other conures, so could I just leave it with the breeder I bought it from when I go off? The breeder also does boarding.

Yeah, lol the reason I chose conure, is because right when I opened the door or the breeder's shop out of all the cockatiels and conures and whatevers (lol), a little conure (not sure what type - think it was a Jenday) flew up on my shoulder and walked around with me the whole time :) then he flew on my head and whatnot it was adorable....the cockatiel just flew off my hand when I tried to hold it lol. But I won't judge by that, they are all different :)

My baby Cockatiels flies to me, I kept one baby that we took in a year ago from someone else. She was malnourished and bloody as she had bite marks on her, she was only 2 weeks old, she almost died before and I managed to baby her to full health. She have always flies to me on command and never leaves my shoulders. It just varies from Cockatiel to Cockatiel, you just haven't found the one that will go to you yet.

If you've made your mind on a conure, make sure your aware of the high pitch scream they make before you decide on bringing one home.

Well, I am pretty torn between the two. I liked te fact that maroon bellies are a lot quieter and less nippy and would give you a more affectionate (so I have heard) attitude rather than the usual conure attitude, and I love all of their colors. Can someone give me like a comparison with a conure and something else to further explain how loud they really are? Not sure of a good comparison, lol, like a fire truck siren? I have never really heard a true conures call. I do love tiels too, I keep hearing mixed things about both birds, but everyone has these cute stories I just get torn between them. I originally wanted a parrotlet, but I decided something a little bigger was better. I guess once I am ready to get this bird, I will go the breeder and let the birds decide lol.

i went to the breeders for 2 years until sylvarie picked me and my wife. there was another lady in there looking for a bird and we walked up never seen him before and he crossed over her shoulders and dropped onto mine as i was looking at a African Grey. the wife looked at me and said i guess it likes you. the lady looks and says "i think i will find something else he seems attached to the man." the right bird will pick you. we brought him home the next day.

My conure is the quietest of all the birds in the house, and he is also the most affectionate. He squawks, in addition to a vast array of other sounds but he isn't all that loud. :green2:

I love my GCC. Trixie has a short fuse and will chase you down and nip if she feels "offended". She doesn't draw blood. She definitely could if she chose to. I'm learning how to read her body language and now the biting incidents have decreased dramatically. Trixie is a snuggle-bunny, especially in the evenings. She loves head scritches and rubs under her beak. As far as noise goes; I grew up with Peacocks. So to me, Trixie is relatively quiet (for a bird).

I like both cockatiels and conures but if they want more of a parrot personality a conure might fit that description better. I would have to agree with everyone that conures like maroon bellied and green cheek conures seem to be not as loud and might make better first time conures. Anyways, your quote how you can not stand conure screams and you have large birds gives me hope that a hahns macaw will not be that bad (some of my coworkers think it will be too loud). I live in a house. When I lived in an apartment a bird would have been out of the question with paper walls and neighbors on the other side of the wall.

I have never really heard a true conures call [/QUOTE] My current Green cheek conures does not realy get loud that often. She usualy does chirps. My green cheek conure I had as a child could let out a loud scream when it wanted. It is hard to describe kind of like a piercing sharp screech kind of like a smoke alarm when its batteries are low but maybe louder (and smoke alarms noises are not pleasant to people). Youtube has videos of screaming conures. I never heard a sun or jenday scream in the flesh. I can not comprehend a small bird being louder then a large too. That said I kind of wondering if it is mainly the sound of their call that drives some people crazy.

Yes my Macaw and Cockatoo can scream loud, but it doesn't last very long. More tolerable to me then a conure. I've had two conures in the past, a Nanday and a Jenday. Went into houses with Sun and Cherry head, plus several others before. The constant none stop scream from them just gets to me. I know there's quite a few long term breeders and owners that agrees with me on this one. To each their own though, as there are people that can tolerate a conure over the big birds as well. I just know way too many people start posting to sell their conures because of this specific reason so you need to be aware of it first before attempting.
