Berry Scary!

Seeing as it's summertime (and berry season is starting), I'm taking an unofficial "poll" of how many fools like myself have fed their parrots some fresh berries for breakfast and *freaked out* after forgetting about said berries later in the day:52:?

This morning, Kiwi got some nice strawberries and blueberries in his dish for breakfast. I don't know if it was painting outside in the sun or what, but when I came back in a while ago, I noticed the resulting poops and just about had a heart attack. I was loading him up to barge into the vets office with my "desperately ill bird" when I remembered what I had fed him this morning :30: He seemed rather amused by my overreaction:20: I'm glad I remembered before calling the vet, or I would have felt like even more of an idiot:32:

Anyone else have "berry horror stories" to share?

One morning I added some poms to my parrotlets morning veggies since they had not been eating them very well, and I forgot to tell hubby. He pulled the dish and was gone for a super long time, and when he came down he told me that PeeWee or Sproutlet was hurt, there is a lot of blood, but he can't find the wound. I said, oops, did I forget to tell you about the poms?
He was relieved but not very happy with me

That's me almost every day, hahaha! Everytime Avery eats fruit or veggies and she poops, I go running to my boyfriend convinced she has some kind of serious illness and needs to be taken to the vet. I was so paranoid that I ended up dumping $200 no questions asked for a fecal exam because I noticed her cage was "stinky". Ended up not being her or the cage. And whenever she has red peppers and I forget I swear she has internal bleeding and is going to die at any given second until my boyfriend reminds me of what she ate.

I swear she's preparing me for the future when it comes to kids...

I am right there with you dinosrawr! Every time Kiwi has even a slightly runny/miscolored/just "off" looking poop, I am panicking and checking the next 3-4 poops to be sure he's not dying. Red poops are the worst, because no matter what the bird ate, it's always in the back of your mind that they are bleeding out!

I kind of wish they were like a car, except with a "check parrot light" that goes off when they're ill and has a code to guide you to the problem That would be *much* better than watching poops or them being a little tired and all the other normal activities you could just as easily interpret as them being in dire need of a trip to the vet.

I didn't have it with berries but with zupreem pellets . My Rb2s breeder was big on the pellets. When I first got home his dropping where way wrong !!! I was freaking out getting him to the nearest vet and contacting the breeder. so glad all was well

Once upon a time my conures were eating colored pellets, And I didn't realize at first, but they only ate the red ones.
Of course once they both pooped red I just about keeled over , until I saw the red pellets in their water bowl(before they got their water bottle) and remembered the colored pellets...
So they don't eat those anymore. But they still love anything red..

Every one of your stories is me every day! I am nearly OCD when it comes to my pets! Kirby is slightly ruffled when sleeping? SICK! His poop is slightly watery? VET NOW! His poop is GREEN? OH MY GOSH THATS-oh wait thats okay...

I remember the first time I saw him on one foot and nearly fainted because I thought he had lost a foot. Ahaha!

Isn't it funny, here we all are discussing poop colors, and on any other kind of website that would just be appalling!!!! I tell folks all the time pet people truly are a "breed apart!"

Growing up with fruit trees and berry bushes around, I have been accustomed my whole life to the seasonal changes in poop color of the wild birds that hit car windows.

The most peculiar was, one fall when I was little, pointing out some staggering blackbirds in the field next door, and my Dad explaining they were not sick or dying, just "drunk" from eating the rotten/fermented pears that dropped in that field! The neighbor's pear tree was far too tall for us kids to pick any of the fruit, but the birds sure had fun with the "drops," particularly after a few freeze and thaws!

Sometimes I think our birds laugh at us "crazy humans" who obsess over their poop and molts and sleep cycles and flip out for (to the bird) no apparent reason.

This thread is hilarious. I gave Luna some blackberries today and my boyfriend freaked out when he saw her messy, berry-covered beak. He thought it was blood, of course, and yelled "OH MY GOD, LUNA'S BLEEDING!" I panicked until I realized what was really going on.

I love this thread, glad I'm not the only one to have done this!!

After a few freak-outs over weird poos I'm getting better at remembering when I've fed poo-altering foods. One notable exception was when I last looked after my friends Grey and he had gone back home that morning. I noticed a big red splodge on the floor under Milo's play stand. Nothing unusual there, he has problems with his incoming wing and tail feathers and often damaged them, they rarely bleed more than a few spots so I did a quick check of wings and tail and all checked out ok. I then noticed The Greens also had red splattered in their cage... *Milo then deposited a MASSIVE bright red poo all over his stand!
Major panic- my birds are hemorrhaging to death in front of me!! Then I remembered giving them cherries for breakfast. Perfectly ripe and bursting with dark red juice...*

Fortunately my friend had been called out so was not at home to witness her Grey's colourful poo reaction before I had chance to call and explain. Imagine the panic if she had seen this and not known about the cherries!
