Bently was once known as Coco.
I am Coco's ((Bently's)) fourth and final home. He came to me about 4 months ago. According to Bently's second owner his first owner adopted him out due to no longer having time for him, so he was always locked in his cage. At some point while he was with his first owner his wing became tangled in a toy in his cage. She claimed she couldn't untangle him from the rope so proceeded to cut off a portion of his wing to free him. When I took him to see my vet recently, he informed me it was about the equivalent of a hand and half of a forearm had been removed. Because of this Bently will never be able to fly again. While at the vet we had to clip the undamaged wing feathers to prevent him from spiraling should he need to glide down.
Bently's second owner did their best for Bently! But sometimes the unexpected can happen and after a run in with other birds in the household. The other birds blew blood on Bently, and it seems to affect his confidence. Bently grew to have an upset reaction to the sound of the other flock birds in the house. Loud noises in general seem to upset Bently the second owner let me know the first owner used to yell at him a lot as well so all these things combined seemed to mean Bently would benefit from being in a house with less birds and noise in general. Which is how Bently went to his third owner.
Bently's third owner had enough space to separate the Bently from the other birds and noise but in the end had to move to a new house. They knew they wouldn't be able to separate him anymore and decided with the help of the second owner to look for a new place for Bently to go. They posted on a group I'm in and it had been just recently that I had been speaking to my husband about adopting my next bird. Because every time I looked around it seemed like birds were in need of homes. So I was already starting to look for a bird I thought I would be able to handle working with, between what experience I have and issues I feel confident in handling. When I read Bently's story I asked my husband if it would be ok to contact them to find out more about Bently. After asking and answering questions both in text, call, and a video chat they chose me as the best choice for Bently. Which was a wonderful delight for me and I'm so excited to work with Bently! We drove a 5 hour round trip to pick him up.
4 months into my journey with Bently and I'm amazed at his progress. Thanks to my bird club he has had lots of socialization and exposure to different experiences. He went from not being willing to step up on our hands to doing it more regularly. He attends expos with me to help educate the public on Sun conures and their care needs. His bird anxiety has also improved since Tulio the cockatiel came into our flock. Tulio and Bently have become good friends who respect each other's space while also interacting with each other. Bently has also been helping Tulio learn that I'm not dangerous as Tulio is not the tamest cockatiel. So, it's wonderful to see them work together for the better.
I'll continue to post pics and updates on Bently's journey as I can!
