Wellington, New Zealand
Parrots
Syd, one 65yr old Sulphur Crested Cockatoo
And now Zak, 24yr old Sulphur Crested Cockatoo
Well, I should say before and during.

So I’ve had Zak for just over a month now and his feathers are coming back, a bit on the fluffy side so I hope the next new growth is proper feathers. The before photo is the outside one, even his skin looks awful there. And the after is from this morning.

Hopefully they come back, it would mean I can take him outside more as our sun in New Zealand is pretty harsh and I’d rather he didn’t get sunburnt.

Well I’m a too guy now.. my 9 year old son had his marshmallow since she was 3 months old I helped him take care of her she was upstairs in his room well the wife ordered me too bring her in the den with my other parrots .
I know she likes it better in my den with the other birds oh ya she is nine months now. My son still carry’s her every where with him so it’s working out pretty good so now I have a nine month old female Goffin too care for full time .

Congratulations!

The process of regaining feathers is a long one. It takes years. There can be set-backs. But, every journey has to have a starting point! Clearly, Zak has begun that journey!

It appears that the underlining sensory hairs are in place and that downy feathers (white fluffy) are beginning to return. Next will be body feathers. It all takes time.

Thank-you, for what your are doing.

I wondered if it was something like that, he had the fluff on his back and wings but they seem to now have proper feathers so that makes sense. Syd's never grew back so I haven't seen the fluffy down feathers like this

Wonderful progress, truly amazing how resilient they are with the right home!

So this is the latest, he’s much fluffier now. He does have ups and downs, seems like he has heaps and then has a bit of a pluck but doesn’t get anywhere close to what he was when first taken out of the garage.

He’s pretty happy, we are at the 6 month mark now so hes been testing me a bit but isn’t winning lol. Toys, decent food and a lots of attention makes a world of difference. My only issue is that I can’t have to two birds out together, Zak tries to dominate Syd my old boy, and he just can’t cope with that or get away fast enough. So they chat and gawk through their cages for now.

Zak has come such a long way, kudos to you for changing his life!
I love seeing before & after pics of pluckers, they give everyone who has a plucker hope.

Thanks guys, he’s certainly coming along a lot since the first post. It amazes how much as I forget how featherless he was then I see that photo.

I love the latest photo of him...looking right at you as if saying "Ya? what can I do for you??"
Marvelous turn around! It is amazing what with just a little bit of TLC,can do.

Whatever you are doing is obviously working...keep it up! You 'too Zak! :D

Oh my goodness! What a huge improvement! It's not just the feathers too, his beak looks better, the skin as you said looks better, and I'd swear he just looks happier. WELL DONE!!!!! Yay Zak!!!

Can you give any tips on what you did to improve Zak's condition?
