My dad is trying to tell me that we should put Jester, my 16 year old male citron cockatoo, to bed at 8 or 9 pm and not wake him up till 11am. Is this true? Because it sounds like BS to me.

I can understand his suggesting bedtime at 8 or 9, but not waking up until 11am doesn't sound right. Some wild birds are awake even before dawn. Not all birds stay asleep until it gets light out. My lory goes to bed when I do, which is usually midnight, and she wakes up at 6am. I'm sure she naps during the day when I'm at work.

Ozzie will start to get ready for bed and settle down at about 9 pm, but he usually go to bed until 10pm, sometimes even 11:30 pm. He gets up at about 7 am (although I have seen him awake at 6 before) and have naps throughout the day.

I try to put Rosie and Kenji to bed around 8:30-9:30, but sometimes Rosie just isn't ready for bed and they go to sleep closer to 10pm. Kenji wakes us both up between 7-8am.
They both take a afternoon nap daily.

Sleeping in until 11 is waaaay to late.

Birds naps during the day, they will go to sleep if they're tired. I never follow the direction of 12hrs of rest at night. So no it's not necessary in my book. You basically just need to see the signs as birds will show you when they're tired with the grinding of the beak, fluff up a bit, and shutting their eyes. Yawning too....That's when you need to leave them be. Otherwise if they're up and moving around at 12am, I take them out anyways.

I agree Mikey,

Rosie and Kenji usually start getting tired around 9:00. At 8:30 is when I start letting them settle down and relax for the night. Rosie will start to act sleepy, and then just go to sleep. Kenji gets squinty eyes and will look sleepy. It's very easy to tell when they are ready for the lights to be turned off.

my guys get locked away at 5pm each night when the cat comes in. around 7 7.30 they will sqwak to be covered. they are quiet from then till they here some one up in the morning, and then they make nouses to be uncovered. please note my birds are out and about with me for atleast 8hrs a day

Each bird varys at my house [and I wouldnt make them do anything] .

I have notice my M2 does better when his sleep schedule is on the rising and setting of the sun. If i have his lights on and it is dark out he will scream until i turn the lights off. but i think every bird is different and you just have to find a schedule that works

My birds get put to bed about 6-7:30pm and are ready to get up as soon as I'm out of the shower around 7am. They love an early breakfast.

Well, you are the bird nut of the family! Your father still has quite a lot to learn!

Depending upon the time of year, my birds may go to sleep around 4-9pm in the evenings and wake up between 6 and 7am. That means that they get 9-15 hours of sleep - depending upon the time of the year.

Birds can, however, adjust to our sleep schedules if we allow them! If the bird doesn't seem cranky with less hours of sleep, they'll probably do fine! Although I feel as if they should get at least 8 hrs minimum. Jester is pretty new to your family, so you and your family still have a lot to learn about him and what he is or is not comfortable with!

My guys all go to bed around 9:00-9:30pm and wake up around 7am... They take naps around 1pm for about thirty minutes and then are refreshed and ready to go, my guys don't care they will nap on a play stand or cage if they are truly tired! Although I do recommended at least 10 hours of sleep for a cockatoo to a new cockatoo owner just to be safe, yor schedule seems to be fine for him all this time so no need to change!
