Ricco - Goffin's Cockatoo
I mentioned before that Ricco (G2) was grabbing his beak/rubbing it on the cage bars, etc. after getting his oral meds. Well tonight while giving them to him, I realized that he's biting the syringes so hard that he's actually chipping/bending his beak? Is this something I should be concerned with? Should I call the vet? Am I doing something wrong? :( This is stressful!

Umm I just checked on him and his beak is bleeding a bit... Should I try to pack it with cornstarch or what? :(

Yes you need to stop the bleeding now! Then you need to take her to an avian vet ASAP! This is not something that should be put off, get the soonest appointment you can.

Thank you. The bleeding has stopped and he's acting normal. Dancing and talking. Grabbing his beak a little bit though. I'm calling the vet in the morning. The vet is over an hour away.

Oh I hope he's ok! I gave my bird antibiotics in a syringe before but she was easy. I didn't know their beaks could bleed like that. Poor guy! You are doing a great job; he sounds like a fiesty, fun bird.

Cameo fought the syringe when giving her thoswe meds. I am glad that is over because Cameo really hated thet and didn`t trust me for a while after. She has finally back to normal but took a lot of patience gaining her confidence back. Cameo`s beak is very strong so I recommend getting this checked out.

I agree , my birds can use their beaks for a variety of things and not break their beaks , so maybe it's best to have him looked at again. His bloodwork will show if he is lacking in anything , I dont remember if you said any was taken during his first visit.
I just don't think Ricco could break or damage his beak when you are giving the meds no matter how much he despises it.....but this is just my opinion....

when i had to give oral meds I soaked it into a piece of food (bread, cracker, grapes etc..) much easier

Thanks so much, everyone. He is much better today. Eating, drinking, etc. He even said a new word last night! "Pretty bird" :D I'm still going to call the vet.

I am glad Ricco is doing better. He is such a beautiful boy!! I am glad that he has you to take such good care of him. It really does sound from all your posts that you picked the perfect bird for you!
