Hi Everyone!

Okay, so Baxter is being aggressive with my son and husband. I fear he has already "chosen" me as his person. He lunges and bites if my son or husband tries to come near him while he is with me.

He will behave with them when I am not around. But they have to use a pine nut to get him to step up for them.

So, I think I need to take a step back and allow my son and husband to handle Baxter as much as possible when they are home.

What do you all think? Is this right approach?

Hope everyone is having a good weekend.

Yes, that's the absolute right approach! Allow your husband/son to spend as much time with Baxter as possible - remain out of sight for a while, and then enter the room. Pass Baxter around from person to person, rewarding him each time he steps up easily and willingly. :)

I believe Baxter is at the stage where he’s letting your son and hubby know he’d rather be with you than them, but they shouldn’t let him know that it bothers them in the least, and that he WILL be handled by them as well, whether he likes it or not. Pine nuts are a GREAT bribe, BTW. :D

I used the same approach with Loki. He wasn't lunging at my son, but really didn't want anything to do with him (was breaking my son's heart)...so I showed my son how I did step up and kisses training, then left the room and let my son do it. It really only took once or twice before Loki started to be way more comfortable around my son.....tho he still likes me best...

I've got a disfavored person training post somewhere on this site...

It's the baby stages of an opinionated parrot overbonding issue...

The disfavored person training was designed to counter that. And it's generally pretty normal with pair bond birds. They have to be taught that it's okay to prefer one person, as long as they don't bite everyone else.
