I've had it in my head awhile now that I wanted to get a Pak-o-Bird for Banner. Whenever we take her out to eat with us or for a walk around, we were using her King's travel cage - we have both the smallest and largest sizes. The largest is way too ridiculously large to take anywhere and I find even the small one bulky and awkward to carry if we want to go for a nightly stroll and bring Banner along. So, I thought the Pak-o-Bird backpack would be just the thing, although I had questions as to if she'd destroy it or if it would really be worth the hefty price tag.
I found the "medium" size on ebay with free shipping and the stainless steel mesh for $215 and decided to go for it. I thought I was taking a chance, as Banner is kind of a big girl at 510 grams - and she's tall, too! I was worried it'd be too small. The only reviews I'd read were for an African Grey that weighed in at 410.
Turns out, it's not too small - and so far she hasn't destroyed it. The only issue that we've had is that she couldn't keep her balance when I walked with her on my back (which, to me, is the most comfortable way to wear it) - but wrapping vetwrap around the dragonwood perch helped that quite a bit. I was thinking about buying a bottlebrush perch for better grip to replace the dragonwood, but the vetwrap seems to do just fine.
Anyway, I'm really pleased with the construction and as long as the flap is closed, there appears to be no way that she can grab onto or destroy anything. I'm impressed because she definitely is at the very least an exploratory chewer.
Here are some photos!
She's inside it in this one - even though it looks opaque, she can see out of it just fine.
The only time she can really get at something to chew on it is if the flap is open. She's tasting the zipper here:
They do sell an attachment to prevent the zipper from being grab-able while the flap is open, but it's 30$ and I didn't feel like it's necessary as we won't be outside leaving the flap open.
Thanks for reading! I can't wait to take Banner out for a walk this weekend.
