hello! my name is Julie. this week I am buying a four week old lovebird. she is lutino with black eyes, turquoise tail, and green belly. she is 4 weeks old and not weaned yet. I am planning on taking the responsibility of handfeeding and weaning this baby. I feel I am ready. the breeder is going to show me how to handfeed the baby. I have been researching for weeks on handfeeding. I have her brooder ready. I also have millet to start weaning her. even though the breeder is going to teach me I would appreciate more tips :) I have raised a lot of baby birds before but never lovebirds. the lovebird baby seems active and older in the videos :p the man has been raising babies for like 22 years or somethings and takes AMAZING care of his birds:rolleyes: he has rare colors such as red fusion and even blue eyed lovebirds! I already have my babies feeding schedule ready. now all I need is a better thermometer. also, is a 60 watt light bulb really necessary for a baby her age? also I plan on boiling water to about 130. mixing it with formula and cooling it to 105. im using KAYTEE exact formula which he recommended to me after 22 years of amazing results with it:) is there anything im forgetting? thanks!:orange::D:41::09:

Hi Julie,
I don't have experience in hand feeding, but I am sure someone else will pop in to help you:) All I know is it is a very tricky thing.
What day are you getting him?

good luck and listen carefully to what the breeder recommends, but make sure the formula is never microwaved, always heat it up by boiling water and putting the formula in a cup inside the boiling water and monitor the temperature. make sure it stays between 104-106 F! any hotter will cause crop burn, any colder can cause slow crop!

sounds like he or she is not a lutino, but a PIED :) congrats, looking forward to photos

What baby birds have you raised before? If you have raised bsby parrots before it's no different then the other ones really. One 60watt bulb is just sufficient to keep the baby warm at that age. Any younger you would need two. And depending on room temperature too.

I'm doing great with him. thank you for the help! he is pretty calm and doesn't move around a lot just sort of sits their sometimes stretching and stuff. one time i caught him cuddling with his rubber ducky. he eats a lot during feeding but i think he is getting bored of formula. he nibbles on seed and stuff sometimes:) he loves sitting on my finger. he is only three weeks old. is that normal behavior for three-four week old babies?
