I have a 7.5 week old Eclectus and was wondering when i should start moving him into a cage? I am hand feeding him formula 3x daily and have started to introduce very little fruit and vegetables.
Hi Ecky, welcome to the forum. I don't have any experience on weaning birds so can't help you there. There are many breeders on this forum who can help you with that one... watch this space
Hi, I don't know a lot about these things but if it were me I'd go by the bird not so much his age. Is he beginning to show signs of wanting out or trying to climb? If so then yes think about placing him in a cage but be sure to line the bottom with a soft folded towel or something similar and place the perches low so as he can't hurt himself if he falls. They do fall a bit when they are young.
Not familiar with Eclectus.....
Sure this goes for most birds though.
I hand raised my African Grey Mishka from 6 weeks old. At the age of 10 weeks I had her in a small cage. Kept a close eye on her, first few hours in the cage, she attempted to climb and fell. Mpw is correct in saying place soft blankets at the bottom, and lowering the perches.
Good luck
I have never hand reared an eckie but I did spend a lot of time at our breeders when waiting to get Puffin and she had Puffin and his sister in a small cage when we first saw him at 8 weeks old. Like the others have said keep the perches low and make sure there is something to soften the fall until it is better at climbing and sitting on the perch.
