I just brought home a baby Caique. He's 11 weeks old. It's been almost a week that he's been here but he doesn't seem as energetic or active as a caique should be. He plays with his toys a little bit and wants to sit on my shoulder all the time. If I put him down on the table or floor he'll just stand there and look at me. Is this normal for an 11 week baby? Do they get more energetic as they mature? He is also very unsteady when he sits on me but that's to be expected of a baby , right? :p

When I brought my caique home last weekend at 14 weeks, he wasn't very active at all. He's probably scared and trying to get used to his new home and you. My baby settled in after like 3-4 days. He's still getting used to everything, but he is getting more and more active. Try not to handle him too much so he can used to his new home. My baby is still not steady on his perches and just in general. Your baby will get better and better at balancing. Hope this helps!

Poor lil guy is still settling in. Snuggle time on your shoulder is good as long as he is okay with it but ever don't force him. He is just a baby, not to sure what is going on yet. I've had my Sennie for a month now, she is 4 months old and is finally settling in. At first I thought she was the quietest ever. She is just now being a lot more vocal, clicks and whistles. Sometimes she sounds like a robot but I can't make out what she is trying to say. So give him some time. Speak softly, move slowly, and touch gently.

11 weeks sounds young. I get two babies on Tuesday. They'll be 15 wks old. I'm curious if I'm going to see the same thing. My wife and I go up to visit them at the pet store almost every day, so they at least know us. <caique icon here>

I've heard lots of stories of settling in though. The average is just under a week from the people I've heard from. Hopefully your little troublemaker will be chewing everything in sight very shortly. You'll wistfully remember the days of silence.

Did you do your new bird checkup?

So good to hear that someone else's bird is clumsy. One of ours can't balance on a shoulder.

Yea, I'd agree that he's just frightened or just doesn't know quite what to make of his new home.. He's also pretty young and may not understand "play" quite yet!! We've been looking at a 12 week old and he's just starting to get frisky and playful..

Until they figure out how to hold on with their beak, they'll fall off your shoulder (tiny feet!) He'll figure it out and start surfing soon.. Also you could show him how to play with his toys so he can keep himself entertained when you're not around.. Just be sure he's eating enough, 11 weeks is young for a weened Caique..
