two quakers, two Blue and gold macaws
hello i am new to the forum and about two years ago i bought a breeding Pair of blue and gold macaws. I studied hard and learned everything i could about Diet, health and every bit of information i could before giving the pair a nest box. So i gave them the nest box and was not long before the first egg was laid and then 2 more. Ok here is the tricky part i candled the first egg and seen the yolk but no sign of fertile. Today the 3rd egg was laid and the first was laid on 09/21/2013 Second egg laid on the 09/25/2013. I understand that some wait to start incubating tell the entire clutch is laid? I am just worried. this will be my first clutch and i want to do it by the book. I just need someone who has been in my shoes "first timer" and let me know what to expect. I am ready to hand feed.I have GOOD homes for up to 5 macaws if these are firtile and hatch. I have given 2 years of my life devoted to learning but nothing has covered .When do B&G's actually start to set the eggs?:blue1:

I am happy to be here. I love my Birds and devote a huge part of my life to them.So i figured this forum is a place for me :)

Have they started incubating process? If they haven't you won't know until a few more days. Since this is their first batch they may not be fertilized. It usually takes a few tries to do it properly. Otherwise one of the pair may not be fertile. That does happen and that's usually why breeders sell out their pairs selling them as proven pairs. Just wait and see, that's all you can do for now.

You can tell these two know what they are doing.its so amazing how everything they do seems planned and very specific . Its amazing seeing how they changed into breeding mode. Thy both seem so determined .
I love this. Great experience . To watch all this unfold is better than any reality Tv show

The pair are 12 years old. They seem to know what they are doing. They are so smart and i am kinda sad they are breeding because i miss them talking to me but they are far from tame. My plan is to get a baby from the pair and make it my "Main" pet companion . So do some pairs wait to start incubating tell the last egg is layed. I have also heard that some parrots will sit on the eggs but not Sit "tight" on the eggs tell all eggs are layed? So sitting tight i guess means incubating.

I am loving this whole process none the less.So exciting !!!:D

Well, you'll know in a few more days if they're fertile or not. Some pairs will start to incubate when all are laid, but most of the time it is done by the breeder removing eggs and replacing with fake one and put them all back once the full clutch is laid to make sure they all hatch relatively the same time. When you remove the eggs, they have to be in a spot where it's not too warm or the process will start rather you like it or not. Then the eggs have to be turned, they have machines that does it but some will do it by hand. Don't hold your hopes up too high just in case they're not fertile. It can take several tries to make it work. IF they're not, you should let them sit on them to let them practice for the time being.

yes if they are fertile i will post pictures and progress . So glad to find this forum

Welcome to the forum, and best of luck with your B&G pair. :) I'll have my fingers crossed that they produce great, healthy chicks for you.

It's usually a minimum of 5-7 days before the eggs start showing whether or not they are fertile - after the incubation process has begun.

so does anyone have a macaw that waits tell 2-3 eggs are lay befor starting to sit them?

To my knowledge we currently don't have any active members who breed big macs to answer your questions. :)

Rather they do or not you should be able to check if they're fertile or not right now, enough days have passed. If you still don't see a single thing, most likely not fertile and just let them practice for now.

eggs were not fertile

Just let them practice incubating! After enough time have passed, they would usually quit incubating or they may continue, you can dispose the eggs before they start to rot.

ok people last clutch were all infertile . But she started another clutch three days ago. I am hoping this clutch is fertile . Anyone have experience with Macaw . Someone said that most of the time the first clutch after a pair have been put together is infertile but this now their second clutch

I believe this works for macaws - If your willing to spare an egg, crack it open and look for a bullseye. Won't work if they've started incubating. Otherwise you'll have to rely on candling.

Best of luck :)

ok cracked all eggs . NONE were fertile . What am i doing wrong . This is their third clutch not fertile . What am i doing wrong. This pair eats better than more humans. They get pampered but yet not producing fertile eggs . Has anyone experienced this?

I didnt say all the eggs, but ok..

We're they a proven pair? Did you get them checked by a vet?
