Hi,

First I would just like to start off by saying thank-you to the creators of this website and its members for providing such a great format for current/potential bird owners to come for information and advice. It is fantastic!

I am not sure if this is the appropriate section to post this, so if one of the moderators would like to move this thread into another area of the forum please do so :)

I live in Australia, and am interested in purchasing either a B&G Macaw or a CAG. I have kept birds for over 8 years now, including breeding and hand raising so I feel as though I am now ready to take on this bigger and more complex companion.

However, I am completely unsure which is more suited for me.
I am away from the house between the hours of 9am and 5pm most days, although I am home most the day on Saturday and Tuesday. I understand that both these birds need regular exercise and out of cage time, but I just wanted some additional information as to what you all believe is the MINIMUM that either species should spend out of the cage per day. Obviously, they will have plenty of toys and foraging toys whilst in their cages to keep them occupied, but i'm sure they crave and look forward to human interaction, with quality time being just as important as quantity.

Additionally, my fiancé is still a bit scared of the birds that we have currently (including Quakers and GCC's) so I am a little hesitant contemplating bringing such a large bird (especially the B&G) into our home. I take care of all the birds and provide them with all their needs, but I still want her to feel comfortable around them.

Primarily, my main concerns are:
1. Noise level - I live in a residential suburban area of Melbourne and have never received any complaints from neighbours with my aviary birds, however, I don't want to break the camels back so the speak. Do you find that both bird are equally as noisy as each other? Or on average to the B&G's tend to screech more?

2. Temperament - which of the two species seems to adjust better to routine or lack thereof? Will the CAG tend to thrive more on a routine whereas the B&G will just go with the flow?

3. Companion - Obviously, both birds will have their own individual personalities and characteristics, but which seems to thrive more on human interaction and affection? I've read that the B&G are a lot more cuddly than the greys, but that the grey's are a lot less hormonal come breeding season and puberty?

Ok! I am really sorry about the long post but I just want to make sure I am prepared and fully absorbed of all the facts prior to making such a large commitment!

Ps -Has anyone on this forum from Australia purchased either species from Mark at Perky Parrots? I had a brief conversation with him over the phone and he did not seem to helpful? Was I just getting the wrong impression because I have read that he raises some really great birds?

Thankyou!

Hey, sorry i cant give much advice on how they will handle with your lifestyle, but!

I purchased my boy from mark at perky parrots last year!

They are VERY lovely people, but very shy and you seem to get the wrong impression, they just aren't very talkative, didnt ever say much to us ;)

Every bird is different, Mark actually told me i shouldn't choose Fargo, and wanted me to get this girl macaw, but i still chose Fargo hahaha They just thought he might not be a great pet.... ha.. :p

and Mark even gave me a 50 dollar foraging toy for free! :)

They have ALOT of birds, so the interaction they can give is limited, although most of their birds were very friendly, Fargo was basically feral, and hated any interaction haha

Go look at their place, it is incredibly... Spotless, and very well set out!

Every single bird breeder in Australia is basically the same though... Every bird is different and an individual, and being in Australia, because they are soo expensive, you aren't going to get that many dodgy unhealthy macaws right? ;) So i would assume most breeders here are incredible! :)

The reason we went to perky parrots was because they were the only people at the time with a boy macaw!!

He wasn't harnessed trained either, and they thought he wouldnt be able to be... But of course now he goes out every day on his harness... Just time and training! :p

Just have a look around, go to different breeders :)

I actually took Fargo for a checkup with an avian vet today, and he said he is soooo much healthier and happier, and better looking, than when i first got him from the breeders ;) haha Cause he was such a mess.. healthy.. but just a feathered mess :p

If you live in Melbourne, is there a reason you want to get from Queensland? There are plenty of breeders all over the place! :)

Hi,

and thankyou for the reply!

It's good to know that you bought your boy from Mark. He seems lovely!

I'm a little worried about you mentioning that they dont have much time to interact with the babies they are raising, but I guess that happens when you have so many birds.

The reason I am looking at Mark is because I can't find any other breeder who has any available, in all Australia!!! Especially not in Melbourne!

If anyone is aware of any breeders in Melbourne i'd love to grab the number!

How was Fargo like when you brought him home? Did he adjust well, or did he same under socialised to you?
Also, what is he like temperament wise? Does he like to screech?

If I do decide to go with Mark, i'd have to fly up to QLD to inspect and make sure i'm happy with his birds and what he has available. He actually has CAG's and B&G available so at least I would be able to interact with both and see what they are like.

Thank you! He is one of a kind :)

Well they had 15 macaw babies when i went, plus all the other birds they breed, so they do have quite a few!

I didnt see much of the african greys, we did go on a tour, but i was more interested in the macaw section ;)

If you call them again, its probably better to speak to the mum, i cant remember what her name was, but she was more friendly and talkative, Mark is just very shy and isnt good at explaining stuff, when i talked to him on the phone is was basically one word answers haha but he was so lovely

Have you looked in the birdkeeper magazine, there are ALOT of breeders and advertisements in the back, or check out gumtree, there seems to be alot on there! I think most of the breeders are in NSW, which might be closer?

I honestly think Fargo and my situation is very different to other peoples, which is why Fargo does somersaults on the floor hahaha
I was 17 when i got Fargo, which is pretty rare to start with, and we share a bedroom, we spend all day together.. We are best friends, which is why our bond is so strong!

I couldn't handle Fargo at the breeders, they nicknamed him 'Feral'
All the other macaws were friendly, climbing on the cage trying to get close to you, and Fargo sat up the back by himself..
So ever since a baby he was VERY independent, which is why now, he never ever screams... He talks, but doesnt scream...

If you want a bird that doesnt scream, you will have to look at the individual bird, and see if they are independent !

But when i brought him home, cause he didnt want to step up or interact, so i am not sure how he 'adjusted', but he was very content, just sat in the cage, just watching everything, didn't carry on and be silly! :p

The OTHER macaws there, were very friendly with me, they were all getting cuddles and giving kisses, so they are socialised and friendly, its just they only had one boy, and he just happened to be the feral one.. But all the other girls were great! :)

Once again, thanks for the prompt reply.

I feel a lot more comfortable now after hearing your explanation about Mark. It makes sense that he is shy and thus reluctant to speak on the phone.

Yes, i've picked up copies of BirdKeeper and cannot find one breeder in Victoria :( Most appear to be in QLD and NSW.. I really liked the breeder Ian Adcock for a CAG but he wont have any available until next year.

I will keep searching and see if I can find any other breeders in NSW or Vic or QLD that I can also check out.

At this stage however, it seems as though I will have to go with Mark.

I wish there was someone in VIC I knew who had a B&G or CAG that I could spend some time with! The difficulties of living in Australia, ey' :p :p

Haha thats ok!

Yes he is shy in real life as well.. It is run by the parents, and then mark, and then i think his brother and sister.. So it is just a huge family business!

Thats all they do, so you can tell they put the effort into making the place look nice, and having great birds!

Oh really? Well at least you get to go on a nice holiday to queensland haha
Their property and aviaries are actually used for a tour type thing when there is a big bird convention on in brisbane!! So its certainly a great place to look at..

Doctor Harry even got one of his amazons from there ;) haha

Yeah living in Australia sucks sometimes, we are about 3 hours away, so i only got to see Fargo twice before we picked him up, so didnt get to spend much time with him!

But if you go there, then you might automatically have a connection with either a grey or macaw!!

There are a few breeders around the brisbane area i think, so if you come to queensland you can certainly just go view different ones!!

Good luck !

Hopefully another member can assist with your other questions about time schedules and noise! :)
