Hi,
We put down a deposit on a blue and gold about a year ago with a breeder but we were in the process of moveing and wanted to get settled first. So we picked one out on Tuesday he's 6 weeks so were going to wait till he's fully weaned. My question is when he's on a steady diet how many pounds of food should we get a month?. I plan to give him the ultimate blend from bird paradise it consist of pellets, fruit, mixed nuts and vegies.

Congrats, expecting parront, on your B&G baby!! :D

That's a GREAT blend you'll be putting your baby on! It's very hard to tell you how much to get per month, as it will all depend on how much your baby will scatter all over the place. :54: Both of my macaws LOVE emptying their food dishes by swiping their beaks through the crocks, making HUGE messes, and for me it's like throwing money out. BUT, it's all part of the fun. They don't do it regularly or every day, but they have their moments.

I would say to plan on buying at least 10#'s of food at a time, if not more. As JerseyWendy said, it can depend on how much they swipe out of the bowl! Might want to buy 15#'s or more the first time so you can try and judge how much your new macaw will eat.

Amount of dry food that they consume per day may also vary depending on how much fresh foods that they eat as well.

But I could be very wrong! I'm just guessing here, and you may not need as much!

My B&G is going through a 5# bag of Harrison's pellets in about 3 weeks, and that's on top of getting at least one bowl of chopped veggies and a small amount of dried fruit/seed mix. And for the most part, she doesn't waste a whole lot either. I guess I've got a healthy eater :09:
