RIP Constantine: Jenday Conure
If I get the cabin down the road from my dad, I plan on building an aviary for Con and the other two birds I plan on getting. I have a few questions. What should I use for the frame? What should I use as the walls? And because I'm worried about snakes, I planned on digging down about a foot and laying concrete in the shape of a box and filling it back in with the sand/dirt mix that makes up the yard then have some type of low wall around the bottom to keep them from crawling in. Any thoughts on that?

Other than snakes, all I have to worry about are raccoons, possums, cats, and hawks. My cats will keep the land bound critters away but is there anything special I need to deter the hawks that won't scare my birds?

Also, my dad had an interesting idea. Because the birds will be flighted and the aviary will be butted right up against the cabin, my dad said he would cut a hole in the wall so the birds can come and go as they please. It would save me the hassle of taking them out by hand and when I'm gone, if they get scared, they can always fly right back into the house. Of course my home would be bird proofed and they'd all be potty trained. I'd want the hole covered with something like a nest box cut in half where the birds will fit in but nothing else will and so that I can cover the hole in cold weather.

I'd also like for there to be a tree or part of one in the aviary so the birds have something to sit in. Then of course there'd be a large bird bath and maybe a little garden of some food bearing plant they can forage in. There'd be toys and their normal food as well and pretty much anything else I can think of that'd make it the coolest aviary on the lake. But than again it'd be the only aviary on the lake :D I'm super excited for this to happen so really hope that the cabin is in good shape to live in. The aviary would be built before anything else is done anyway. I can always pee outside or bath in the lake if need be :p

Any thoughts, ideas, comments, advice, or questions are welcomed. Thanks!

Yeah I've already seen this website. I've gone through about 2 pages of Google websites and read all that I can. Guess I really just wanted to talk to a bird person about my aviary lol

Your idea sounds amazing! Any new word on the sun conure?

He's made an amazing recovery and the store is going to sell him to me with my discount even after I leave. I should have the little sweetheart by next sunday. Gotta get a new car first though. Something funny I thought of earlier was his flights should be growing in so he'll get to learn to fly but he chewed off all his tail feathers so it's gonna be interesting watching those first attempts :p

So happy you will be bringing home baby soon!! :)

Glad all worked out well and you will be bringing him home soon :)
Your aviary sounds like a birdie paradise !

My family thinks I'm crazy for wanting to work so hard on my aviary. I was telling them how big I want (10fx10fx10 possibly bigger if able) and they were like "Rachel! That's gonna be bigger than your cabin!" They were baffled that I didn't care. I'm gonna have my two Conures and I want a third member but I'm not sure what to get. I'm torn between a Timneh, a Lilac Crown or a Ringneck. Oh the decisions! :)

I understand completely :) I'm planning on a outside aviary too.
So I can relate to you wanting to "go big or go home" :p

Have you made any designs for yours? I'm dying to start sketching mine out after looking at the area I have to work with. I'm pretty sure there is a cabin on the side I want to build on but it is further away. Of course I was able 7 years younger when I was last wandering down that way so things may have changed. Boy, am I excited xD Can't wait to get with my dad because he's excited to build it with me and we always have loads of fun together. Maybe the experience will make him want his own bird :p

One suggestion I would like to make is that if you plan on having outdoor access, instead of just a doorway, build a small entry room. Like going in one door, closing that door, and opening the door to the aviary. This way your birds will not be able to fly out into the world. The little entry room would be where they'd go. I've known people who lost birds because they quickly flew out when the door was opened. I hope I've explained this properly. Another idea is to have double screened walls. Similar to a double paned window, but, screening instead of glass. This will help with predators from the outside. Outdoor aviaries are so great. Good luck with this terrific project!

I agree on the double screening. I will definitely do that. Also, I was thinking instead of having a door on the outside that someone could possibly break into, I might have my dad put the door on the inside so the only way into the aviary is through my home. That way if a bird does try to escape it just ends up back inside.

I've been giving the soil thing some thought because several articles say it isn't a good thing to use. I thought I'd rake it every few days and scoop it all up and put fresh in every other week. Most of the "front yard" is sand anyway. All this thinking is really "counting my chicks before they hatch" kind of thinking seeing as how I don't even have the cabin yet.

"Forewarned is forearmed". It is better to think these things through BEFORE the problems arise!
