Hello all :) I am planning to take Hiroshi to the vet once I get my paycheck and I am pondering a few things I know you guys can help me with ;) (Keep in mind Hiroshi looks and acts very healthy):greenyellow:

Firstly I want him to get a nail-trim, Anyone know of prices in Canada?

Second, What type of tests should I have done?? If any??

Third, Any special questions I should ask????

The reason I am asking is mainly because I'm a bonehead and as soon as I get into the vet I always forget everything to ask! lol Id like to have some things I can write down and take with me:rolleyes:

Thanks a million*

Most nail trims go about $20-25 US dollars here. Not sure how much they are in Canada.

Check for psittacosis, chlamydia, PPD, influenza, and salmonella. (That's what i get my birds checked for at check-ups)

There's really nothing special to ask of. That's up to you

Hope I helped :)

I go to Calgary Avian & Exotic Pet Clinic, which is located on 24th Street
SW. It is a great place, the people are very nice, and best of all... they have free little candies!!!!:p
Heres the link to their website: Calgary Avian & Exotic Pet Clinic Home

If you don't know the sex, maybe you could get him DNA tested???

I am not exactly sure how much nail trims cost, but you can call and ask.
The number is 1-403-240-3577

Good Luck!!!!! :D

Vet will get the weight and look at droppings under the scope. Some suggest blood test for a baseline. Vet should let you know how much that would cost. Rosie did not have blood testing done on her first visit. At this point you may want to discuss any issues and see what the vet suggest for nuturition. If you bird needs clipping that is usually done also.

Thanks everyone! :)

Cass, I actually went there for a job shadow one time and I'm pretty sure its the avian vet closest to me so I'll definitely be going there :)

Good on you, Hiroshi should enjoy his vet visit, mine usually like it as long as they don't get poked and prodded too much lol. A nail clip here usually costs me $10-20AUD as did wing clips when I used to have buddy trimmed.

Maybe the vet can finally shed some light on why Hiroshi is such a goofball :p

btw, I do the same thing in the vets, I always forget what I need to ask. I do the same thing when I go to the shops too, you would think I would learn to write a list lol.

Lol! That would be a miracle, the lil bugger gets more silly everyday....and I've found out its contagious!

Now my house is full of crazy nutbars making kissy sounds and repeating words over and over again in squeaky voices. If the neighbours didn't know we had a parrot, they would probably commit us.:32:

Get a blood panel done, including liver panel if you have not done it in over a year or ever. It is good to establish a record now and you should do it again every two years unless something abnormal occurs, then of course go sooner.

Nail trimming should not be too expensive, my vet is about 15-25.00 US. The bloodwork can be about 75-100.00 . Totally worth it as birds hide illness really well and if you wait until a bird "looks sick", it might be too late!

Ja, but then you still have to remember to take the list as well - and that can proof to be an even bigger problem.:54:

I've been in and out of vets this month - its been real crazy. During this time and especially today cause I was there for 3 hours, I saw all kinds of birds. I would say that most did not like the visit and ALL of them screamed in the vet room. It was actually very easy to distinguish between first timers and regulars. (The regulars were nervous.)

90% Of the parrots were there for nails and/or wings but there were some that REALLY looked sick (Sterretjie was super healthy looking in comparison.) This made me scared - what if my girl catch that disease? While I was sitting there I thought of the quarantine thread and got a bit worried.

I decided that next time that I take my girl to the vet I will take her in a basket that has a material lining and I will cover the top with a blanket.

I would have thought that people would think of the other parrots at the vet and would keep the really sick parrot in a basket - but clearly they either do not think or they just dont care.

Yes I think you have a valid concern. AD was right there are time we need to pur our birds in a bubble. Happy you have your little love back home with you. How is she acting?
