tropical 30 years old parrot
Hi,

20140110_233230.jpg

I have a tropical parrot (33 y.o), and it has Avian pox (wet).
We noted a very swollen up area around the left eye (feathers fell off in this area too).

In our case, we introduced a non very common treatment to avoid asphyxia with this increasing level of mucus, which was affecting him when breathing (as we can notice by his problems breathing), we removed the liquid from inside his skin with a syringe. (the liquid is slightly denser than water, first it was a little bit red -melt with blood-, and now it is much more red -almost blood color-. We extract something like 3-4cc every time).

The parrot looks relieved after this, but of course it doesnt' like to be punctured, and we wonder if the stress of doing this is helping to avoid its healing.

The area fills up quickly and we have to do it every 2 days.

I don't know if we did it right, if maybe we are stimulating a faster production of mucus. It's been a month and a half, and I wonder if this has become chronic. If we don't extract the liquid.

PS: Other symptoms:
- My parrot got blind on that eye,
- for a while was blind also on the other one (completely blind then). He recovered a little on the second eye.

Of course, we give more treatments:
- Vitamins (specially A)
- We clean the eyes every day with salty water and antibiotics

It was very weak for a while, but now at least it is able to grab the food and eat. I think he suffers (don't know how much), when it hides his head behind his back feathers.

I would appreciate to have a professional opinion or any advice from someone who knows about this situation.

I agree with the karens, you really need to take him to a vet as soon as possible.

Avian Vet is needed.

Yes, Avian Vet ASAP. Hope the poor little thing hangs in there!!! :(
