Kiwi ate apple seeds

Kiwi is acting like cyanide poisoning

What do I do

The best thing you could do is rush Kiwi to the vet right now! IF they catch it in time they can flush it out of the crop before further damage can be done.

He's dead..

I tried squeezing his crop like I do for sour crop in pigeons but nothing was in it. He was dead in minutes, before the vet could even answer me if they'd take birds,

He was eating an apple with a bit too much core than I'd like. But there were no seeds, so I thought it was alright. But maybe he ate the seed before I could look. Or maybe the core is dangerous. He looked so happy eating it. Made a mess, silly boy.

Then I looked behind me and he was sitting on a pile of blankets below the couch. Thought it was odd since he likes being up high, but thought nothing too strange. Then a bit later I looked behind me & saw what looked like him wooing the couch. Then he fell head first and I thought 'crap kiwi why are you so clumsy' but when I went to pick him up, he was breathing hard and had his wings stretched out. I held him trying to see what I could do, tried to empty his crop & then called the emergency vet. Explained what was going on & if they could take him. Between when she left to see & coming back he was dead.

I'm sorry Kiwi. I should've protected you. You were just beginning to blossom. I'll always love you.

Oh Cassie. Oh Cassie I didn't see that Bambo passed on. I'm sorry for you too.

Maybe they'll meet up there. Maybe Kiwi'll show him how to wave, and Bamboo will show Kiwi how to annoy everyone yet still get them to love him, hehe.

The seeds for sure is poisonous but it's conflicting story on the core itself. Some say yes and some say no....

Um....excuse me are apple seeds poisonous because I was about to give my birds an apple for the first time??

yeah i hope so? :)
well im so happy you can still smile. but im sure we're gonna be up there some day too, so its not really goodbye i hope

How sad. Very sorry for your loss.

I've fed my birds sliced apples with no problem. Another problem with apples is the amount of pesticides saturated in the skin and outer layers. Ever bit into an apple that had a funky taste? Even the supposed 'organic' apples can contain unwanted chemicals.

How sad to lose your bird in such a manner. You were only trying to be a good mom by providing the very best for your pet.

I'm so sorry:(

Yes they are poisonous. I would imagine the core having some kind of residue or such from the seeds since they grow in that area. So no don't feed it to your bird. You can feed the flesh of the apple to them but like another mentioned the skin can have chemicals and such on it.

O my gosh. I am so so sorry this happened :( Fly fee Kiwi!

I am so sorry to hear about Kiwi.... Its so heartbreaking, but you may very well not have mistakenly given a seed, that cover that sticks with the apple where the seeds grow can be a problem. When you cut the apple, you may have cut a seed without ever knowing it. I am so so sorry....

Lisa - apple seeds contain a cyanide... in large quantities they are dangerous to humans.

Your best best with birds is to get one of those goofy animal corers, it takes the center out completely. Just toss the center to always be safe. Even when I use that when we have apple and peanut butter (a favorite non gluten snack for me), I still use a paring knife and take the thin edge of each slice off to make sure non of that harder pocket from the seeds is left.

Taking a moment to state what most of probably know, but just to be safe and repeat.... no apple seeds, no chocolate, no avocados in any form, no onions,... those are the major toxins that we very commonly have in our homes. There are lots and lots of others be careful or avoid food lists, take a moment and do a quick search on the forms. Just figured I'd type the obvious...

I'm so sorry for your loss of Kiwi:(
