Hi,
Teddy is a little over 3 months old now. He's on track to be weaned soon.
The spoon feeding is out of the picture and he started to eats little veggies here and there mixed with a little formula, all by him self already.

I need to start training on his screaming, its blowing my brains out whenever im around him and quiet when im away or in a different room!

Is it a good age to start the screaming ignorance process?
What about training on tricks, plays and games?
He east half a meal of fruit pellets (snacking) during the day, should i try to get rid of this habbit now? or it doesn't hurt?

Might be a god things to get him off pellets soon before he gets used on it "if he's not already". Speaking from personal experiece. Hopefully someone will get back to you on this soon

Best not to feed pellets to begin with. He's still pretty young and the scream is a call he use to ask for food when your around. If he's eating on his own pretty good, talk toto him first to see if he would quiet down, if not just walk away when he screams.

IMO he is a little young to be weaning. My eclectus babies are not weaned until they are at least 14 weeks old & never sold until 16 weeks or older.

When my babies call i answer back, I don't go running to them, just the sound of my voice lets them know that i am not to far away. I never really ignore my babies but i also don't shower them with affection either.

I usually find if they are vocal they are hungry. I think you will find that's the reason for all the noise & if you offer him a feed of formula in the morning & afternoon around dusk he will be happy. When eclectus chicks get to around 10 to 12 weeks they slow down on the formula to the point of refusing to eat at all. This is to drop their baby fat in order to fly. Once they drop a few grams & are able to fly they usually go back to eating their formula. When my babies are at this age i offer weaning foods through the day.

Weaning foods are a small parrot seed mix, small amount of pellets, sprouted seed/bean/pea mix, corn on the cob, & soft fruits.

Please read the link below, this is the diet i wean my eclectus babies on to.

I think target training is a great place to start and is very helpful for almost any trick or activity with your bird :)

I would say good luck training them to do tricks...to me they're not trick doing birds, they'll learn to do whistle, funny noise, and talk better. Even though I taught JoJo to turn his cheek towards me for a kiss and make kissing sound....lol....

What about training on tricks and games, do you reckon it would be a good time to start?

With eccies they do exceptionally well on praise. They are not totally treat orientated or care to much for clicker training. I start training my babies as soon as i take them for hand rearing. Each time i wanted to take them from the box to feed i would ask them to step up. Before long i would just place my hand in their box & they would just step up. Each time they did something I liked i would reinforce it with praise. They thrive on it. My eccies tell me everyday they are good girls & boys.

Training is not just about tricks... It about behaving properly.. and that should start as soon as you get your bird home...

OH my!! I'm new to this forum, and also new to owning a bird.... My conure is 6 weeks old.. I've had him for two.. I didn't know that he shouldn't have been sold so young, until I started reading the posts on here... Do you have any pointers for me? Also, Conner (my conure) has already been to two different vets, with a very good report.

I started training my boy at 6-7 months. He would literally do ANYTHING for a sunflower seed. He laernt to play basketball in about an hour, learnt to wave, spin, eagle, all the usual tricks in amazingly rapid time. I also potty trained him in about 2 hours - but thats when I got lazy.

Once he had learnt everything I got bored, and he grew up! Now he only responds to praise - the novelty of 'tricks' wore off for me but i really regret him losing his association with the potty training. He had just mastered it (command was 'go poos!') but then I had my stepkids stay for 3 weeks and they were EXTREMELY impressed with his ability to poo on command. With 4 kids surrounding him saying 'gopoosgopoosgopoosgopoosgopoosgopoos' for hours every day he soon lost the association bewtween pooing on command and reward. i REALLY regret that happening.

He will take a harness but hates it so Im just working up the motivation to retrain him with a different command - but once he realises that pooing doesnt get him any reward its very hard to reverse it.

Its never to early to start training but think of them more as games that encvourage good behaviour and he will love it!
