Hi Everyone. Never really thought about caring for a parrot-always been a fish man until I came to live in Paraguay with my Paraguayan wife.

Then on a visit to wifes relation we were asked if we would take an Amazona parrot that had been dumped on them-they had loads of cats. We warmed to the idea on meeting the little chap and took him there and then.

Life changed immediately in our house-chosing a cage and then building a garden aviary. Within two weeks we are very close with the bird. He started coping our words, asking for caresses and grooming my beard. We loved it. Then we lost him through our own fault. We hadnt realised that his wings had grown sufficiently to fly. He just saw a gap and went. Never to be seen again. We were heart broken.

We very soon decided to have another one and to be much more careful. One day, again my wife visiting relations she met a local trader in birds-I believe he may have been illegal, but anyway she came home with TWO birds! I was actually delighted but at the same time nervous having two. My nerves are proving well founded because it is proving difficult to achieve the same closeness with these two as we previously had. That is a problem which I intend to post or look for help in the forum.

I am Spanish/English. We live in Aregua. I am already very impressed with the forum and know I will find it very agreeable and useful. Than ks for letting me join. Pedro and Dominga

Hola and welcome aboard, looking forward to your stories and maybe some photos? :)

Welcome and congratulations on your two birds!

You say you haven't got the same closeness with this pair as you had with your first bird. That could be for many reasons, but the first one that comes to mind is that your first bird spent a fairly long time in a loving home. Do you know whether these new ones have been carefully raised or simply kept in a cage and fed? That could make all the difference.

Really, all you need to do is be patient and spend as much time with your birds as you can. Before you let them out of the cage for long periods, spend a LOT of time sitting with them in the their cage, speaking and singing or reading to them. When you think they're used to you, open the cage door and wait for the birds to come out. If they don't, then that will tell you they're still afraid, so wait for a few days before trying again. If you go too fast, you might scare them. Birds can take a very long time to get used to a new home and new owners, so do be patient.

Of course, it's always good to give treats like bits of fruit or vegetables. Once birdie knows you give him good stuff, he'll grow to love you over time! :)

In the meantime, do ask questions and please post photos. We love to see our members with their birds! :)

Welcome to the forums, Pedro and Dominga, I’m glad you found us. Im very sorry to hear your first Amazon was lost, that must have been heartbreaking. Wish you well with the two new family members.

Welcome Pedro, we are so glad that you joined our family. My condolences for the loss of your previous fid companion.

As Betrisher said, it takes time to achieve the closeness that you are looking for. Also remember that you have 2 birds instead of 1 now. Sometimes 'birds of a feather' really do 'stick together'. Hope that it's ok with you to know this and just take time and enjoy them for what they are able to give.

Thank you for rescuing them and giving them a better life.

Welcome Pedro and Dominga, thanks for sharing a touching story. Very sad to see a beloved companion escape, hope he was able to join a flock.

Good Morning Pedro, Welcome to the Parrot Forum along with Pedro and Dominga, I have a question, I caught the fact that the first bird, the one that sadly flew away, was an Amazon, my question is are the other two Amazons as well or another breed? and if an Amazon, which Amazons are they? if your not sure if you can figure out how to post pictures, that will help a lot.
