I took the plunge and decided to adopt an indian ringneck, she's (unsure on sex but we were told hen) a four month old green indian ringneck.

She isn't tame in anyway and that is why I believe is why the family didn't want her. She was timid and moody, handled with a glove and completely untamed.

At the moment we have her in a large cage in the front room, she has a full foraging toy, a shredding toy and a coconut which can be used as both haha.

I'm feeding her the seed she is used to, as well as Harrison's fine high potency pellets. With greens and fruit on the side. She hasn't taken to the pellets too well yet so I have added a little amount of juice to try and make it more appealing.

I'm currently sitting with her for hourly intervals through the day, talking, humming and offering food to her. She hasn't taken any yet but she's only been here since Monday so it's still all new.

I have however started to try and reinforce the clicker by clicking and dropping treats in her bowl every few minutes. Conditioning the clicker hopefully.

Il get pictures soon! Hope your all well! :green2:

After lots of clicking and treats in the bowl Arya finally took some millet from me earlier today :D shortly afterwards she took some sweet corn directly from my fingers through the bars! As a reward I have swapped out her forager and added a slightly easier one with fresh fruits and some treats.

Hope your all well! Hopefully not far from starting target training!

Congratulations on your new addition! Can't wait to see pictures of Arya! That is such a beautiful name:)

Today has been great!

Arya has gone from timid and scared on Monday to happily taking food from my hands in the cage. Albeit she is still a little scared and she does take it and go back a few steps, but she does keep taking the treat one after the next and seems to enjoy the treat time. I click just before she takes it to hopefully condition the clicker!

I can see target training in the very near future! Hope your all well!

I love this baby indian ringneck!

Awww, I am so happy that things are going great with you two! Makes my day to feel the love you have for her already in your posts:)

Thanks Terry :)!

I guess this is becoming like a personal diary of her first month so il continue for anyone who is interested.

Arya has now got the hang of target training really well within her cage. I can bring her right to the front of the cage and direct her around using my stick and clicker. She accepts treats from my hand loads and so I've been doing as much target training as possible, with regular intervals and breaks adding up to about six or seven goes a day.

Last night and today I have been adding my hand in because she has been doing so well. I'm not trying to get her to step onto the hand because I think that may be a little too quick, but I am targeting her around my hand, putting the stick on my hand and generally letting her build some trust with me and know my hand won't hurt her.

Next step will be reinforcing the hand in the cage and then maybe tomorrow il work at getting Arya to step onto the hand.

Hopefully she won't be so cage bound soon and she can enjoy the playgym and stand we have made her, get some time out and have a shower haha

Hope your all well,

Please do continue with these posts! I am very interested to see how she comes along:)

Oh I'm glad, il continue the little journal then.

Today hasn't been so great. I'm hoping tomorrow is a new day with better outcomes.

She seems to have somewhat regressed, she is refusing to move within the cage to target, she is just ignoring the target stick like we have never done it before. She won't take treats from me, nothing. This morning we seemed to have a good go, but now she being stubborn and impossible and it's so deflating after we have been doing so well.

She did also manage to get out the cage while we were training earlier which ended in a not so nice travel around the front room and towel to get her back in the cage safely.

She is just terrified of everything, hands, if I get up of the seat, if we move while next to her. I don't know what's happened. So frustrating and really disheartening.

Look forward to a fresh start tomorrow.

Hey, Joshuwaaa. The towelling might have set you back a little, trust wise, but it's nothing that can't be overcome... especially given how swiftly things were progressing before. And also keep in mind that even without a towel incident, she is bound to have bad days as well. They are like people that way. I've had streaks of like four or five days in a row where Bixby is picking up everything I'm teaching him with lightning speed. Where he's (almost) perfectly behaved and eager to learn... followed by a day or two where I feel like I'd get more cooperation from a lump of clay!

I felt just as discouraged as you did, too. But after seeing that he has his ups and downs, I've learned to just shake it off and look forward to his next training session.

But congratulations on the progress you've already made! Nice!

I enjoy your updates about Arya too! It sounds like you're amazing with her and you have a really good approach, don't let occasional uncooperativeness bring you down! Before I had tamed Meg, she did that a few times too. I didn't worry about it and "started over" and she was quickly back to normal again. IRNs are weird ;)

I wish I could offer some awesome advice - and I kind of feel like I should be able to, as I have tamed a female 9 month old parent-raised IRN whose only knowledge of humans was that they're scary and likes to chase and grab her - but I feel like most of the credit goes to the fact that her best friend is an IRN who really loves people ;)
Lol, anyway, I'm sure Arya will be an amazing companion bird in no time. Just keep up the great work! :) Meg didn't even take treats from me until she'd been here for a week and a half or so.

(Also, love her name! My favourite rat at my school (I study animal care) is named Arya, after Arya Stark :D)

Aww thanks for the encouragement! We have been moving so well and considering she too was parent raised I should really just appreciate how far we have come so far.

I love the name, and Arya was also named after the game of thrones character! She is sassy but loveable!

I'm just hoping we will build the same connection me and my other fids developed. I think tonight she may have been a little too tired, and perhaps not as hungry as I thought.

Literally two minutes after I posted I went back and tried again and I got about five touch training treats to her. So that will do for this evening!

So much is happening for her right now! She is doing so well with her food because she was seed based and now she is eating pellet and seed cakes I am making for her. So not all is bad.

No doubt keep posting! Thanks guys!

Thanks for sharing your daily news about your new adventure with Arya. Any pics to share?

Definitely get some pictures for you, her feather is beautiful. I am little worried she may be a male haha the band by her eyes is quite distinct at the moment even though she has no ring yet.

Today has been a little of both. Before breakfast is always a great time to play and train because she is a little more hungry and so a little more motivated. However now, a few hours into the afternoon she doesn't seem interested. She more so wishes to sleep. As a baby I can imagine this is just her napping and growing. She hasn't shown signs of illness, but I think a vet check is in order as soon as she is more settled, just to be safe.

Target went well. I can't move to step up at the moment, she will target the stick around my hand if I'm slow and steady, she will also touch the target if it's on my hand, but she isn't comfortable with getting on yet.

Diet is debatable, I have that high quality seed mixed with Harrison's fine pellets, which I somewhat "bake" haha into a little cake, something I learned from here. She is eating well, but not as much as I would hope and this is a little worrying too.

Il post some pictures now and stop being moo, I'm still feeling the low from the halt in progress, but this has to be at her pace considering she isn't used to much of anything

Hope your all well!

She is completely camera shy so I'm sorry there isn't much, but I didn't want to force it too hard. Looking sassy as ever!

She is so beautiful...and I bet she is sassy!
Do you add anything else to the "bake" or just the Harrison's and seeds?

Haha yea she is!
The bake is just the seed and Harrison's pellet alone, just following this vet video I found on here. In her side dish she has carrots, peas, beans and sweet corn which I thaw out with hot water. An then she has fruits throughout the day as well as sunflower seeds as treats which she doesn't usually have.

Im tempted to say that you have a male on your hands. The shadowy ring around the neck looks just a little to prominent. Kiwi went through a phase like that before his ring came in clearly.

And just because I love my fid to death heres a picture of Kiwi :D
