Arm & Hand Protection

I’m definitely getting me a pair of these or the arm ones. I really need them now

Most parrots hate gloves, and are afraid of them, and wearing a glove will make things worse, not better. Birdman666 taught a great technique of wrapping a towel around your arm, securing it with an ace bandage, then putting on a long sleeve shirt over that. This is good for larger birds that step up onto your arm, but I don't know an equivalent for hands. The trick is the bird can't see you are protected, so he just thinks biting is not effective on you.

I agree with kentucienne, I have cut gloves for work, but clark doesn't like my hands covered...work on trust.

A parrot isn't a shark.

I'm working on trust with Maverick. The only reason I really want these gloves is for the reason that Maverick doesn't like perching on my bare skin because he looses his balance so easily because of his cut tail feathers. Maverick has stepped up onto my bare hands but he does it hesitantly, when I have gloves on, just my normal leather ones he steps up readily.

I think he's scared he will slip and fall with my bare skin. I had just a tanktop on today and when I went to pick him up he would not step up but once I put my sweater on he jumped onto me and went down to my covered hand to get some pets.

although with Vivian its a different story. I have true fear of Vivian's beak.

yeah some birds aren't good on bare flesh, unless it's perfectly level. I have nice shirts,.... then I have walmart shirts I wear under my work clothes and when I'm at home for clark to sit on. they're basic nylon poly whatever comfortable blend.

Mostly I just let him hang out where-ever he want's to wander....and don't worry about it to much. He finds his own stable place to sit, usually shoulder.

Maverick just wobles all the time no matter where he sits unless he is gripping my shirt or jacket. I feel bad for him, because his last owner cut his tail feathers he finds it hard to trust me

I can hardly bear to think of the breeder's cutting a beautiful bird's tailfeathers! How can the poor things learn to balance or to fly????
He will definitely do a better job when they grow in.
Also, Patagonians have skinny little cockatiel feet and so they fare better (my vets have always agreed) with slightly longer nails!

He does have longer nails since he has a problem balancing I did not want his nails to be cut too much. He had really really long nails, so long that he couldnt walk right.

I used this briefly. I still use this once a day to poop Mochi before extended OoC time. Now I just offer my fore-arm instead of a finger. Try to rely on these as little as possible.

Yeah I would never rely on these as a means of handling my birds.

I experienced this with my first parrot, Chicken. He was very, -very- nervous around bare hands, but would readily hop up on a sleeve, a gloved hand, or a toweled hand. I also had the impression he felt more secure and comfortable with the fabric material to really grip onto with his claws.

I did eventually get him comfortable with bare hands to step-up onto, but he always preferred cloth.

I haven't ever successfully used gloves with mine. I think it can mess up their understanding of how hard they are actually biting.

I often have had to wear Kevlar "bite sleeves"--NOT WITH MY BIRD...Or any bird (as I haven't owned a pair personally and they aren't designed for birds) , but for other reasons..Nevertheless, they look pretty normal if you don't hook your thumb through the hole and they do cover your arms (like a long-sleeved shrug)...I think the brand I am most familiar with is BitePro (but I can't find my sleeves on the current website). Anyway, I have wondered if they might work for birds. I have never used them with pets.

That having been said, I have had pretty great success with both getting bitten and stopping the biting from my bird (without bite sleeves). She is much better than she used to be, and in some ways, having to deal without protection makes you pay better attention to their signals. If you do go this route, I would wear them even in times of peace (which would be annoying), otherwise the bird will catch on...
