So today I visited a little African grey for the 3rd time. I posted a photo of her in an earlier thread. :) She is just the cutest little thing! I wish I could bring her home! I have been hinting so much to my partner about her, I was saying I would move this into my room, move that over there (To make way for the cage) And he slyly went off and measured a cage. I would just LOVE if he turned up with her by surprise one day LOL! Here is a photo I got today. How can you resist her? I need to win the lotto lol!

I hope so too. She is just adorable!! Grey's are very pricey out here though, so I guess its up to my partner, he knows I want her lol!

They are expensive here as well but having seen first hand the prices of everything in australia when i lived there about 10 years ago i can only imagine how much more they cost there. Im guessing at least $2000 if not $3000

Here they seem to range between $900 - $2000

One option might be is to check bird rescues and see if they are offering any at a reasonable price. I also find that breeders tend to charge much less than pet stores or at least they do here for example a normal green cheek conure at a pet store here would cost $850 and if i got one from a breeder it varies between $150-$300 (colour mutations are more).

I know a rescue bird may not be the same as that pretty girl you have been looking at but sometimes you can find nice birds at shelters too that really need homes.

Either way i hope you find the bird that works best for you and get to bring it home :)

This girl is $5500 lol. :( Same price as the breeders. But you are right, the pet shops usually charge much more then the breeders do.

I'm actually going to have to look around and try to find a local bird rescue somewhere, because I've never ever heard of any around here! Lots of cat and dog rescues, but no bird ones. :( Maybe I'm just not looking hard enough. When I have more space I would love to rescue some birds.

If you were in melbourne i could probably get lots of info for you but i dont know anyone in sydney.

Forgot to add they might know of other places you can try as well

I know, it does suck hey lol! :( My partner said maybe they would drop the price if she's there for a little while as one macaw they got started at $5000 and was there for a few months and went down to $2000. But who knows, I don't see them much at all so I'm surprised someone hasn't got her already! I love visiting her, she loves head scratches hehe.

Oh, I feel for you. I know how badly you want her :( Have you thought about asking them at the Pet Shop if they will take less for her? You never know!! Its worth a try :D

is that 5000$ USD or 5000$ AUD?

of course then I check the conversion rates and find for the exchange rate isnt very good.

She is gorgeous but I just can't get over that price! It's amazing to me how different the prices of birds are depending on where you're from. Here, I see greys all the time for $700-$800, the most expensive one's I've seen(not including pet stores) are usually about $1300. I know quite a few people personally that have gotten "second hand" greys for free or for under $200(with cage). Can someone explain to me why they are so much more expensive in australia compared to the US? Obviously there are more of them here, but why exactly is that?

maybe greys are less common there. java sparows are not common in pet stores where i live, but in europe they have them all over. could it have something to do with that? my society finch cost 40$ at the store and online i found the same kind for 5$. also the english budgies at the store are 90, and the ones online are 30. however they had a quaker which was usually 300, but because he was there a long time and had some bitting issues they said we could have him for 200, but we didnt get him. you could try looking at other stores or negotiating. if the breeders near you are too pricy you could look at breeders further away and maybe they'll ship, or you could look online or caraigslist. hope this helped, she sounds like a real sweetie!

They are less common here, I don't think many of them were imported over, so there are only very few breeders out here.

In US dollars it would be $5,756.19 Haha.

No other stores have grey's that I know of, This store rarely gets them because I've been visiting for years and this is the first little girl I've seen! I should really ask if they would drop the price but I don't think she's been there long enough lol! Can't hurt though! :D

Sending good vibes you way that the pet store lowers the price for you. I have to say, that is so painful to hear. I haven't even paid that for any of the cars I've had in the last 16 years or so, lol! I have had a couple of trucks that cost more though.

I know, even writing down the number is hard hahahaha! Thanks, I really hope they do! :p Maybe if I buy the cage from there they can give me some kind of discount lol!

Plus your Ekkie has the same name as me so I feel a special connection to her, lol! I always read the threads about Audrey:)
