Are female red-lored amazons loud?

I'm meeting someone tomorrow to pick up a female red-lored amazon, and the current owner promised me that the parrot will be quiet. According to him, she will not go on screaming fits as I know most parrots are known to do.

Are female red-lored amazons generally loud or quiet? By LOUD, what I mean is not the actual level of noise it CAN make, but the amount of noise it will make throughout the day. (there's a bit of conflicting information on red-lores, and there's really nothing on gender difference of noise; so I was hoping to get a bit of scoop before I pick her up.)

#Do female red-lores flock call often, or scream for whatever reason (like attention or boredom)?

It really depends on the 8ndividual bird more than gender or species. :)

I have to agree. I have same species same gender birds who are polar opposites on the noise scale. If noise is a big concern I really dont think it is wise to just go and pick one up without spending quite a bit of time around the bird in her normal environment. Also, just because the bird doesnt scream for the current owner does not mean she wont scream for you, and have to be trained out of it which may take quite a while; perhaps more than your neighbors are willing to put up with?

This female RL 'may' very well be a super quiet bird in her current situation. That, however, does not necessarily warrant she will be equally quiet in her new home.

Males and females both have the potential to be loud, and as others have mentioned, much of their noise level comes down to the individual and how you train them. If you consistently reward and praise and give attention for "good" noises, but ignore the bad, the bird will eventually learn what noises get it the result it's looking for. Also, bored, lonely and upset individuals do tend to make very annoying screams, but why would any owner allow their bird to become bored/lonely/upset? They also vocalize when happy, and while loud, it's loud like happy children loud and usually happy noises are not unpleasant or annoying. Though, keep in mind even the happiest, normal quietest bird will get the occasional bug up their butt to sit there and screech, and some need to "send you off" and "greet you" when you leave/come home with a minute or two of hollering, but with PROPER care, training and environment, you can train out the inappropriate screaming for the most part:)

When you say you are meeting someone to pick up a red-lored, do you mean you are meeting someone say, from craigslist or other ad, or is it someone you know? If you bought the bird from someone you don't know, I wouldn't trust what they say. They might say anything to sell the bird. If it's someone you know well I'd be more apt to believe them about the bird. That said, there is not way to know if that particular bird will be quiet or loud in a new environment. Any parrot will probably be LOUD at times, be it flock call or otherwise. Congrats! Make sure to post pics of your new fid! We love pics!

Well, latent screaming ability is there for any amazon. Mine is a very quiet bird for the most part.

They tend to be on the shy side for amazons. But they are very devoted once they bond with you. One of the most devoted of all of them...

"The parrot that owns me" was a red lored. If you've read that book...

Personally, I live it every day! Sally is my flock leader by strength of personality... She's an amazing bird!

Is Sally on a gym made out of a coat hanger?

Why, yes.

Yes she is...

If you look out the window, that's when we lived in the apartments... Didn't have the space for a big playstand, so I improvised.

It doesn't have to be fancy to be functional. (You just have to know what THEY like.) It was also 100% portable. Move it from room to room, or house to house.

Sally used to do laundry with me, and I could hang that thing from one of those laundry carts...

(Now, Maggie comes with, but she sits outside on her portable tree.)

Now that is an AWESOME idea! Our washer/dryer is in our kitchen, and I hang Kiwi's swing on the laundry bar above the sink when I'm doing dishes. Though, I think one of those may be even more fun for him with his boing so he can come down and say hello:D

I actually go to a commercial laundrymat. Get it all done in an hour.

Take a bird or two with me, sit outside with them while the laundry is going, and play... They love it!

It gets them out and about in public. Keeps their skills up. Makes laundry less boring....

A LOT less boring!

The birds also come with me, and sit outside at Starbucks for morning coffee... that's also a really fun thing for them...

The downside of having out and about birds, is that they WANT to come, and frequently EXPECT to come with...

O my goodness do they ever! Kiwi does not get the concept of "42 degrees and rainy". He sees me leaving and gets all upset because he doesn't understand why he can't come too. Can't wait for it to be warm enough to bring the feathered monster out with me again!

Sounds like one of mine... No, Sally, it's pouring down rain... We're not going outside, and you can't go in the tree today!

People think we take them out to draw attention to ourselves... Uummm... no... they're going stir crazy and driving me nuts at the moment. They want to go for a ride in the car...

Totally depends on the bird and the mood. My OWA is not prone to screaming, but on the rare occasions when he does, he sounds like a pterodactyl. All zons are capable of being really loud if and when they want to.
Interestingly, our two Zons are the most "polite" in the mornings. They generally just chatter or talk to themselves really quietly until we're up, then they do polite flock calls until we let them out. Our cockatiel greets the sun with LOUD SHRIEKS daily.

My Red Fronted Macaw is my loud one in the morning...

She gets excited to see me when it's breakfast time...

And she gets aggitated if it gets to be much past 7:00 and she hasn't seen me yet, cuz it's past breakfast time...

She still does that "Hungry chick down here. Haven't been fed yet." thing...

She's my only one like that, though. My other birds are quite polite...

Amanda made one of these for Zilla and she's had the same results I had with it. Zilla loves the thing...

And with a zon that gets territorial from time to time, you can put him on this thing, and carry him out of his territory to someplace where he'll have a better disposition...

The concept works! Been using this one for well over a decade...

Huh?? What?? Sorry my Amazon Screamed in my ear at 200 decibles...I didn't hear what you said.

Ohhhhh ok...yeah it depends on the bird...all birds will scream at some stage.....playful, want something, or just like to test their vocals.....It's in their nature. Not generally habitual though, it's an occasional thing...Like all dogs can bark, do they spend the day barking all day long? some do.

I like the hanger idea too... Very clever! It even has the 2 places on the sides to hang toys. It's perfect for that!

The coat hanger gym is an awesome idea.....Now If I don't hang my coat up on it...My Senni would sneak into my coat pocket....Anything to go with me when I leave the house. LOL.
