We're very excited that we've been approved to adopt Zeus, a young CAG who was rescued along with many other parrots from an apparent hoarder earlier this year.

Zeus should be coming home mid-week, so we have a couple of days to get furniture rearranged and his (?) cage set up.

Whoo-hoo!

Thanks, everyone.

We've got an appointment to sign the paperwork and bring Zeus home Sunday afternoon. :D Unfortunately, we and the rescue folks had some scheduling conflicts that didn't allow us to do this during this week as we expected. They're an hour drive away, which makes it a little harder to meet up. It's very much worth it, of course.

Yes, that picture is of Zeus sitting on my hand during our second meeting. He (she?) was very calm and friendly with us even as strangers. Zeus could hardly wait to get close enough to preen my wife's hair.

Zeus will be our first parrot of this size. Our other bird is a Senegal. We've had him for about half of his 7.5 years. He seems happy and healthy, so apparently we haven't done too terrible a job. :p We look forward to many happy years with both of them.

Congrats! Zeus is beautiful. Oh, and I love Senegals also!

Thanks.

Our Senegal, Tyrael, is super sweet. He loves to be handled--especially by my wife. Hopefully Zeus will soon be as comfortable and interactive with us.

And hopefully Zeus won't be such a momma's bird. :p

Zeus is Home

Today was the big day. Zeus is home. He seems to be settling in nicely so far.

During our visits at the Rescuer's home I never heard him talk, but tonight I'm pretty sure he said "Bite?" askng for another bite of apple. We were about ten feet away, but it sounded pretty clear to my friend and me. I hope his vocalizing means he's happy with his new home.

Mikey the Chocolate Lab sniffed the carrier once as if to say "Oh, another bird." I'm very proud of the way he takes things calmly in stride. (Not that I'll leave them alone together unsupervised, of course.

My wife left earlier today for 10 days in Fairbanks for work, so she missed out on bringing Zeus home. Maybe while she's gone I can teach Zeus some new words, like "touchdown".

Congrats on your adoption, but please keep in mind that Senegals tend to love to be the only bird in the house. They can get very jealous, especially since you have had him for that length of time. So be prepared for that jealousy to be displayed with the BEAK. I know of this first hand:)

Was that a pun? I hope you weren't bitten. ;)

I'm making it a point to spend time with Tyrael (the Senegal) first, feed him first, etc. I don't think he's going to be too jealous of MY time, but when my wife gets back from her business trip next Tuesday, that might be altogether different. Tyrael likes me; he LOVES her.

We'll be careful, though. If there's anything reasonable we can do to ease the transition, we'll do it.

Two Month Update

Zeus has been with us for a couple of months now. Everything seems to be going well. As with our Senegal, Zeus seems to prefer women to men, and my wife most of all.

He tolerates other people just fine, but he seems much more at ease with her. He accepts physical attention much more readily from her than from me, for example.

It's only been a couple of months, and there is no hurry.

Since coming to stay with us he has begun speaking a few words. He says "Hello-o" and "wanna bite", "'nother bite", and lots of different whistles. He quickly picked up on a call I taught our Senegal years ago, but Zeus can hit the low notes that the Senegal can not.

One interesting difference between the two birds is that the Senegal loves bedtime and eagerly goes up to his sleeping cage when it gets late. Zeus acts more like a child who is afraid he's going to miss out on something. Of course he is younger...maybe that's the difference.

I can't believe how much more a Grey poops.

Re: Two Month Update

Good to hear that Zeus is adapting good for his new home. I too have new AG and also was shocked by amount of a poop production:)
