We went out for about three hours to a family christmas lunch and when we came back, our pug, Gyzmo, was very excited and happily ran around, snorting and barking. It suddenly seemed like he was choking and he was hacking as if to hack up something. He then swayed a bit and dropped to his side with his legs straight out and stiff. His eyes were open and staring stiffly. I don't think he was breathing. We were all very scared and rubbed his little body trying to coax a reaction from him.
Within a minute he "came to", got up, and walked around as if nothing happened. He is a bit sleepy at the moment but otherwise seems fine.

Does anyone know what this was? Could it be a seizure? Could it be that in his hysterical happiness he somehow didn't breathe properly and didn't get enough air?

I'm planning to take him to the vet on the 27th as soon as the public hols are over, to have him checked but that is two days away!

Please help! He is 8 months old, very healthy and eats and sleeps well. He doesn't have any weird behaviours that I've noticed.

oh wow, I really have no idea.
I do watch Cesar plenty(the dog whisperer) according to him, dogs with short snouts, have more issues with breathing.

It sounds like Gyzmo had something in his airways and lost consciousness for a short period of time.

why do things like this happen on x-mas??so scary....gosh I hope he will be fine....
sorry I can't help but that's what it sounds like to me.

Thanks Beth. Yes, scary things always seem to happen "after hours" don't they? We were all terrified, I can tell you :(

He's been fine all afternoon but we've also been keeping him quiet and not allowed him to get too worked up. Can't wait to see the vet though. I won't rest until my poor Gizzy has had a check up. Even if the seizure (or whatever it was) was the resault of some condition, at least the vet will tell us how to handle it.

That's why I would never be able to get a pug. Adorable things, but between the snorting and hacking I'd feel like they're always uncomfortable. I wish Gizzy a happy Christmas, and a clean bill of health, and this was just a freak thing :D or a solvable health issues.

*hugs* to Gizzy

Yes, a pug wouldn't be my first choice either ( I prefer big breeds) but I took him over from someone who urgently had to find him a new home because she couldn't keep him in her new situation (divorce issues) and he may have ended up at the spca or worse. I must admit I had my reservations but when I went to meet him, one look into that 'ugly' little smooshed face, was enough to melt me ;). Now that I have him, I can't imagine life without him. He is the sweetest, naughtiest, most adorable little thing! I just adore him and will do whatever is necessary to ensure his health.

He has not had another incident so I hope it was just a reaction to being so over excited. Vet tomorrow!

The issues with pugs are not nearly as prevalent as you think.

My dog had a "long soft palate" and would make "choking" noises sometimes (never passed out, though). Pugs can have breathing issues. Could be to do with that, but obviously he needs to be checked out to diagnose him. Dog Breathing Problems

Before I got my first pug in '94, I did my research on breeds, but had never actually seen a pug up close in person. When I met the breeder, the momma pug greeted me and all I could do was look at her face and ask myself if I could let a dog that looks like that lick my face everyday for the next 12-15 years.

Hi, yes the vet said he probably just had a spell due to over excitement and shortness of breath because otherwise he checked out perfectly healthy. He has also not had another episode so I'm sure thats all it was. Thank goodness!

Thanks for asking :)

That's great to hear! *hugs* must've been terrifying to see your dog just kong out. Tell him to take feel breaths next time ;)

LOL @ Sportsandsally! Yes, we try to keep the excitement levels in check now and calm him down when we think he's getting too hyper.
